Advice on getting stored motor up and running

I have what I think is a '94 Yamaha, 15HP, short shaft, manual start. To my knowledge, this motor hasn't been cranked in years and I am in the process of getting it put back together (it came in pieces). I am going to replace the impeller, change the oil in the lower unit, replace the manifold gasket and do some basic cleaning up. What things do I really need to focus on to make sure I get this motor going right? Compression at this point appears to be 90. That's with no gas/oil in the system. I'm not going to try again until I get water hooked up to it.

Hi tiger, you seem to be on the right track, don't forget to check the bearings, oil seal and change out the o-rings also grease the splines whilst you'er into the lower unit.
A good cleaning out of the carbs and a new diapharam kit installed in the fuel pump should help.
oh! and also new plugs , I hope that you do have a service manual,if not,it's imperative for you to obtain one before you begin any work on your motor, and definetly read it a few times prior to comencement.
Keep posting and let us know how you progress :)

Thanks for the info, I do have a Clymer manual and a friend who used to work on motors so I should be in good shape. I'm just trying to get it to the point I can crank it so i can make sure this thing will run. I'll keep you up to date.

Also, Shoot a few tablespoons of TCW-3 into the spark plug holes and turn it over by hand using the flywheel, to lube it up before you attempt to start it. Double the oil mixture for the first few gallons if it hasn't been run for along time.

Will the fact that it is not lubed up affect the compression numbers?

I would'nt crank it up without making sure the motor is adequately lubed, scoring the cylinders should be avoided.

Yes. The cylinders need oil for the rings to seal properly, in order to get an accurate reading. After you get it running for awhile, take another reading when it's hot. That will show the true compression.
