Hi,

I was handed down a boat from someone, and have been having too many problems with the engine. Its pretty old, so I'd like to replace it (1975 50 HP johnson outboard) with a more dependable engine. Can someone give some details on what is required to get a new engine? Do I have to get the starter and steering system replaced as well? How do I know if my new engine will fit my boat? Two stroke vs. Four stroke? Is there a more inexpensive alternative than going through my local boat repair shop to getting an engine? Any thing to be careful of?

Thanks for your help...

Steering should not need to be replaced. If the motor is the same brand/make, you may not need to change the starter/tilt/trim cables. However, most motors in the mid-range come with controls but not steering cables.
There's lots of info on this board for 2 vs. 4 stroke question. Do a search and you will have more than enough info.
Your dealer can tell you if the motor will fit. What's the max. hp the boat is rated for?
Check here on iboats for motors as well as ebay. Shop around. I just bought a 75hp Yamaha and the price difference was $800 from one dealer to another.

Re: Advice on getting new engine

Hi Goldenboy
Here is my opinion, for what it's worth.
First, nothing beats brand new, it's defenately best. From what I can get out of your case, I would advise against a new motor. Please don't be offended, but just the age of the boat and I assume the trailer, even though they are in good condition, are worth very little. Drop a new motor on the back, and try and sell it. Odds are you won't even get the value of the motor. If I was in your shoes, I would Unload the whole thing as is. And go buy something that is race ready, have fun with it, take care of it, so it will have some resale value when you are done with it.
Now if your handy and you enjoy tinkering as much as boating. Then repair the engine you have and enjoy the way it is. It sounds like you got this rig for nothing, so you could stand to dump a little money in it. It dosen't sound like that motor is in too bad of shape. The dependablity of any engine is up to who maintains it.
