I am planning on cleaning my carberators and changing my water pump. Have never done this before. What are some things I should know. I tried to take off the lower unit once and it wouldn't come off I believe it was connected to the drive shaft? I read somewhere the lower carberator must be taken Off to get to it and release it.

Also can I test my water pump on ear muffs? And what should I look for to consider it functionable or not?

Thanks!

Actually your shift rod connects under the carb. gotta take out the bolt that holds the shift rod to the shift linkage. and make sure you get all 5 bolts out of the lower unit. there is one under the torque tab. then it should slide right out if it is snug, get you a rubber mallet and smack it a few times it should come right off.

So does the carberator have to be taken off to get to the bolt that connects the rod and linkage?

if you are going to clean your carbs, you are gonna have them off anyway. but with a few extensions and a swivel you should be able to get to it. if you just aquired the motor or it has been settin a while its a definite thing to change.

Since you are rebuilding the carbs taking the lower one off lets you access the shift linkage much easier. There are several good tutorials on rebuilding the carbs, but make sure that you remove all the jets and soak them in the one gallon can of carb cleaner, no since in doing it half way. When you reinstall the lower unit make sure that the water tube lines up and that you are not forcing it.
