I took off my starter and solenoid this weekend for some repairs and found that the fly wheel is very rusted. Apparently saltwater has made it in to that part of the engine and corroded the starter and solenoid as well. I looked at the engine cover and saw that the seal is not intact in the back. Could this be the problem or could the water be coming in from somewhere else? If so, is this an expensive/ hard to fix problem?

The cover will keep out the rain BUT salt air is still going to do its thing without removing the cover and spraying your favorite stuff on the metal (like Boeshield)as part of a regular maintenance program

things like removing the sparkplugs once a year will assure that when there bad they will come out without problems ;)

Unfortunately you do have a bigger problem. All Hondas are prone to water ingress into the fltwheel housing due to a combination of a badly fitting water pump outlet grommet and perished flywheel housing seal. The flywheel housing should not have any moisure in it at all and I suggest you fix the problem now rather than later as the next thing to rust will be the lower crank seal track and you will find the engine dumping oil through the leg.Right now the fix is simply a matter of removing the powerhead and fitting a new separator case seal and replacing both water tube grommets. It is a fairly time consuming job but cheap on parts.I would leave this task to a Honda dealer unless you are a competent mechanic or have good DIY skills.

when you come off plane fast, the trailing seas sometimes make it up the back of the motor and into the exhaust ports on the back of the motor and can cause fault codes in the computer(due to the oxygen sensor sensing the moisture)...Honda has some redesigned exhaust pipes(service bulletin #56)that are supposed to help alleviate this...see your local dealer
