Re: advice on 2003 Honda BF50

Honda 50 is solid. One thing I would say is that it is a carb model engine and most of the new stuff is going EFI. Merc, Suzuki and Yamaha all went that way. Honda has not done that with the 50 yet.

If you are getting a good deal on the Honda, and it checks out, I would say go for it. In general, Honda resale is pretty strong, so it might be worth pricing out a new EFI just to see how much of a gap you are looking at. End of the year is a good time to buy a new motor.

Used values tend to vary by region. Thinking an 03 BF50 might be going for $3500 to $4500. Might be able to find a new 50 for $6000 or so. Probably still some new 06 models around somewhere. I just got an 06 40 at a nice discount.

Re: advice on 2003 Honda BF50

I have one on a 17' aluminum boat. It has only 200 or so hours on it and has been trouble free. I have the factory shop manual (very extensive) and do the simple valve checks/adjustments, water pump and timing belt service myself. Not much trouble to do at all. It's very quiet, starts right up every time and a tank of gas seems to last forever. I would buy another BF50.
