Re: Advice on 1956 FD-10 15 hp

Here's a "watch-out"----Watch out you don't leave it unattended or I might sneak away with it!:) I'd like to have an FD-10, too! There aren't really any boogers that I know of if it's like my '56 evinrude 15.
I am wondering why you don't want the '59 10hp?? They're good motors....
Or do you just like the 15 the best and don't need the rest?
Good luck fixing it...

Hey Jason,

I'll play with the QD-20 when I give up on the FD-10...The FD-10 isn't pretty right now and I bet if you floated up the Mississippi to St. Louis in about a week, I'd give it to you! I didn't realize how nice my QD-17 looked until I saw this FD-10! I've read that after 1957 Johnson went to a weaker lower unit on the 10 hp and it sure is ugly to look at compared with the 54-58 models...but I wanted some 'practice' outboards and they fit the bill. Since this will be a first attempt at restoring, I told my son if we can't get 'em runnin', we could paint up the hoods real nice and make lamps out of 'em.... the wife would love that! or not!

Hey Jim,
You've got to TRAIN those women. Once they've been fully brainwashed to the joys of outboards in the home, they live in sheer ecstasy--they become one with their surroundings....
really, though, if the FD-10 is complete, I'd be suprised if you couldn't get it running. Those old OMC's are TOUGH.
As to the 10hp's with the sorry lower units...... I hear from reliable sources here that they made a few subtle changes in the bushings and such that beefed them up a bit in the right places and even the '58 model was a decent lower if you keep the water out. I just never find one that doesn't have water in it.:D Actually, I worked on one for a guy the other day that had a super nice '58 10hp that had a flawless lower unit on it and the oil inside was pristine. Boy, was I jealous!
I don't despise the '59 johnson that bad even though as you say, it's a dog next to an earlier model in looks.
don't forget to take before and after shots!
Later,
JBJ

JG, so you want the "watch-out" that you won't find in the books? Watch out for the lower crankshaft seal, part number 303804. They were crap. And when they fail, water gets up into the crankcase and destroys everything inside. I strongly suggest you pull the powerhead and replace the seal whether it needs it or not.

Thanks, Frank. That's just the kind of 'watch-out' I'm looking for! I don't have a parts catalog yet for the FD-10, but I've been contacted by someone who might have one from the 56 Evinrude 15...so that might work?. and I couldn't find that part number in my QD-17 catalog, so it must be different in that model. I appreciate the info and the picture.

OK, got the powerhead off and dug the rubber and springy thing out of the seal. Any tips on how to get that metal housing out of there....can't seem to move it and I don't want to break anything at this point. F-R where are you??!! Thanks.

Follow up: OK I couldn't wait so I took the hammer and little screwdriver to it. Now, do I need a special tool to put the replacement in? Hate to use the hammer on a new part.

OK, found a big plastic washer in the tool box, put it over the seal and took the hammer to it.. tight fit.. good luck to the next guy trying to get it out.... I hope it's not me trying to stop a leak.
