Advice Needed - Need new 20-25hp motor

I have an older Legend 1468 widebody boat (rebadged Smokercraft). It's a deep wide 14', rated to carry up to 1000lbs and max 35 hp engine, weighs about 185 empty. It's also a short transom, so I need a short shaft motor.

(see specs below, the newer Legend 14' boats are different specs)

I had a older 20hp Merc that was accidentally distroyed. I would like to replace the engine another at minimum 20hp engine. I prefer something newer, since I'd like to keep it a long time and want something reliable (not that my Merc wasn't).

Used Outboards are rare around here. I found a few that seem okay. First is a 2004-5 Honda 20 hp 4-stroke for $1700 CDN. The second is a 2004 Yamaha 25 hp 2 stroke for $2400 (this motor was used by a camp ground). The third is a 1999 Mariner 25 hp 2 stroke for $1200. Last is a 1989 Johnson 25 hp for $800.

Will the Honda 4 stroke be slower than my Merc? I wouldn't want to be any slower, I'd actually like a bit more power. I have used a 9.9 Honda and it seemed like a dog. The Yamaha seems high priced to me and being used by a camp probably means high hours. I have heard mixed reviews on Mariner's from this vintage. The Johnson is probably too old to consider, unless it's a really good motor.

Any advice? Any motors I should look for? Any advice on how much difference there is between a 20 and 25 hp engine? Any tips on what to look for in finding a good used motor, I am a very good mechanically when it comes to cars, just not too familiar with outboards (other than a few repairs in the past I did on the Merc).

20 hp is 20 hp, whether it's 2-stroke or 4-stroke. A 4-stroke will be marginally heavier, and much quieter. A 2-stroke will bring on the power faster coming out of the hole, but again, they're both ultimately generating the same max horsepower.

I don't think there are any bad brands these days- you have to decide what your best deal is based on the condition of the motor.

Re: Advice Needed - Need new 20-25hp motor

Thanks for the response. As long as the top speed on the Honda is the same as the MErc, I'd be happy with it. Are 25 hp really noticibly faster? Right now I have a newer 15hp Johnson on the boat that I am borrowing from a friend. It's defintietly a little slower than my Merc was, but it seems to accelerate almost as quick.

Any other advice is really appreciated. I am a novice when it comes to outboards.

I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong section too. I didn't know where to post since it involves multiple engines.

I'd go with the 99 Mariner as long as it passes a compression test.

I have been running a '97 Yamaha 20hp for 7-8 years on the 14' jon my dad and I built. 2-smoke, longshaft, pull start. Runs great, shows no signs of having any engine issues. We bought it used from a fishing camp in Canada on eBay.

I'm not sure about the current market, but that engine has been incredibly reliable.

Yeah, I'd pay that for an '89 25HP Johnson without batting an eye provided it has no issues. Those rascals run a long time.

Any opinions on the Honda? I think it sounds like the best deal so far.

Also, I have a '93 Nissan 25hp. It runs like a top. I have a good number of folks who own/have owned Nissan/Tohatsu motors that they are dang near bullet proof. Look into one of those.
