advice before I damaged motor

I'm ready to slide my engine forward, to get to my engine coupler. It is a 1985 merc 120 hp. Obviously I will hook one end of my chain to either lifting hook, attached to the front of the motor. Now the question is,, if I split it at the flywheel housing, where do you think would be the best place to attach the opposite end of the chain ???

first it would be good to know what brand of motor and outdrive you have they are different in terms of removal so shoot that out there and maybe we can help you out ... good luck

oops misspoke didnt see that it was a merc with that i would remove the two bolts on either side of the bellhousing to gimblehousing find a suitable bolt position in the rear opposite the front bolt so as to keep the motor as level as possible then raise it a little as possible to clear the mounts and pull forward and out of the drive shaft ... really best to pull the outdrive first if you havent done that yet it makes removal of engine and replacement much easier ... i would go for a bolt hole in the back of the head if there is one there to hook the chain to .... good luck

As I recall, my Merc 120 had a lifting eye at each end of the head; doesn't this one?
If not, locate an unused tapped hole in the end of the head, put a 3/8 bolt in it with a short piece of ?" chain. Try to keep both front & rear chains the same length to keep the engine from tilting.

Ayuh,.... Move 1 of the either to the aft end of the head....
