Hi,
I am new to boats. I have poked around here quite a bit, Especially in the restoration forum. I have read in its entirety,
the lone star flamingo thread by Woodonglass. I am also reading the runabout renovation book.
I am looking to purchase a vintage fiberglass runabout, 14-16 feet, and I am in need of wisdom. I have my eyes on a couple of 60's Corsons, and also saw a Steury.
It seems that boats of this vintage all have sustained some sort of damage. Should I expect, going into this that I will automatically need to plan on cutting out the floor to dig out waterlogged foam? Is there any way to check for waterlogged foam, or is the only way to cut a hole?
One of the Corsons I looked at, the floor looked pristine, but there was a shoddy repair made on the front of the keel where someone used mat on the outside. The other Corson also has questionable keel wear, including a spot where the gelcoat looks chipped off. The other concern I have is a hole about a half inch wide and a 1/4 inch deep near the rear of the boat near where the gas tank goes near the drain hole.
I can post some pics if that would help.
I feel confident about making repairs, but am afraid of water logged foam.

Thanks,
october

Is this something I should pass up due to this damage?
Or is this to be expected for something this old?
This one is 1965 Corson.
Thanks again,

So after a hundred views, and no response, would my post be better received in another forum?
The restoration forum perhaps?
I was just looking for some words of wisdom...
Thanks,

Welcome to iboats!

The damage in the pictures doesn't appear to be too bad. Given that flotation foam wasn't mandatory until 8/1/1973, are you sure the boat has any?

Can't help you on the foam but the scrapes in the fiberglass are an easy fix and do not appear to compromise the hull. I would use Marine Tex for the fix

It's stored up high and dry now,I'd be more concerned if it sat in the water all the time.Fibrglass will soak up water if left to long. That looks like not to hard of a fix. Be shure to check the flooring, and transom when buying any boat.

Thanks,
I am unsure about the foam...
The owner told me that Corsons were foam filled.
Hard to say... I have found very little info about Corsons.
Just trying to figure out if cutting out a floor is a matter of if or when...
