I am seeing a lot lately ads that say that some entertainment event is "Live, from whereever". It doesn't take long to realize that the show was recorded some time ago and might even have performers in it that are now dead. Recent examples are "Live" concerts by Elvis and Roy Orbison. Both, of course, have been dead for over 20 years.

Somehow It seems to me that a "Live" broadcast allows us to watch something as it happens. Anything else must be recorded and not "Live". What am I missing?

Is this some sort of secret agreement to lie, like "Farm Fresh" produce only really means that it has not yet begun to rot? Does it really only mean that the performers were alive at the time of recording?? I wonder what alternate terminology might apply.

recorded live. such as the Eagles concert, it was recorded at sereral live concerts.

American Idle is transmitted as a live performance, probably with a 5 second delay, in case of a swear word.

Re: Advertising words.

If a concert is not "live", what the heck is it? How else would it be recorded if not while "live"?

I still contend that advertising the recording as a "live" performance is a lie.

I agree. I'm sure in a lot of situations when advertised as "live" it will draw a bigger audience and therefore better ratings.

Live performance is before an audience as opposed to a studio recording.

At least that's the way I remember it for as long as I've been buying music ('bout 50 years)

hope it helps

You are probably overreacting...or just fighting a losing battle..
While I don't disagree with your statement (or your irritation), it is hardly a new phenomenon.

If I go through my vinyl collection....and there will be some members who have no idea what THAT is...I have any number of "Live" albums that I bought in the 60s and 70s.
That certainly is a "lie" by your definition, actually, it makes no sense when you think about it; but perhaps one which any of us who willingly buy that type of item somehow legitimise. i.e. the perception that "live" is somehow "special".

Don't get me started on food billed as "organic" or "organically grown"....;)

In BC we have a telethon that is for handicap kids. They make millions with performances donated from performers. But they advertise it as live performances like you said and there all recorded. It make me wonder if the performers make one show and give it to many charities to be aired at there discretion.
