Adjustments at Higher Elevation

I have a 1986 140 hp Mercruiser w/Mercarb with an Alpha 1 outdrive and am wondering what, if anything, can be done for higher elevation boating. I am running at 3500' elevation which is not too high but my boat does seem to have suffered a little in performance.

It's my understanding that a person can change the gears in the outdrive but I don't want to do that because we go to lakes at lower elevations as well.

Can timing be adjusted without doing damage? If it can what, is the standard rule? Carb Adustments?

Re: Adjustments at Higher Elevation

Don't change your gear.

It certainly is not your gear that is affected by the level.

Your engine can be adjusted to cope with it. Any dealer has the info on how to do this. If you do not have the needed instruments it is no DIY.
