Adjusting throttle linkage on volvo aq130d

I have a volvo AQ130d with a 280 outdrive. The 130d has dual carbs. I just rebuilt both carbs and now I'm trying to hook the throttle linkage back up.

My question is--where do I set idle with respect to the throttle linkage/throttle handle? Understand that I have never had an opportunity to take this out on the water, so I am a bit unclear as to how it all works.

I know there is a button on the throttle handle thingy that i think puts it into gear. Is the idle/neutral position when the handle is straight up? Is this the proper position for setting the throttle linkage at
"zero" position?

Thanks!

Straight up should be nuetral, Idle position. The button on throttle may be to release the shift cable so the you can increase the throttle without putting it in gear during warmup, etc. Can't be sure though since I can't see it.

Post some photos if your still not sure.

Good Luck.

Re: Adjusting throttle linkage on volvo aq130d

Thanks. There is a button next to and behind the throttle arm that pops in and out. From what I can tell, in is 'in gear' and out is neutral.

I got most of it working--except for reverse. I got everything fairly synced up in forward, however reverse will screw it up. Pushing forward on the throttle will pull down on the cable and subsequently the linkage lever on the carbs also pulls down. The problem is that when I push the throttle arm backwards to engage reverse, the cable will just push up against the lever and bend it if i were to push hard enough.

I would think that the mechanism would employ something like an idler gear that would let the reverse motion of the throttle engage reverse and then throttle up normally(pulling the throttle lever in the same direction as before--down), allowing application of throttle while in reverse.

Since it has never worked since I have been working on it, I don't know thats how it works--or what normal function is supposed to be.

Anybody know how this is supposed to work?

Thanks!

It sounds like you may have the cables switched at the control. Is that possible? When shifting into forward, the cable should be pushing out at the outdrive, The cable pulls in for reverse. The throttle should be pulling in both forward and reverse.

I doubt the cables are switched, only one of them will reach the outdrive. When I looked at the outdrive, it appears to be working normally(out for forward and back for reverse).

I am seeing the problem at the throttle lever where the cable hooks to it. Forward and adding throttle pulls down on the lever at the carb linkage, but reverse pushes up--and the linkage wasn't designed to move up.

If I just had another one to look at so I could see how it's supposed to work...
