What effects does having the carburetor run rich on performance of the engine? I had my motor overhauled last summer. The mechanic said he adjusted the carburetor to run rich for the break-in period. Should I re-adjust it now that the motor is broken in, so it's not so rich?

Re: Adjusting Carburetor

Running rich can add to carbon build up in the cylinders. (If its TOO rich)

Re: Adjusting Carburetor

I would be very interested in suggestions on this post. I don't mean to cut you off deeps, but I wanted to know more about my carb adjustments. I have a 4 barrel, stock, on my mercruiser 350. It runs great but looking at the carb. I see the 2 adujstment screws towards the top of the carb. The one on the left is straight vertical and the one on the right is cocked to the 10o'clock position. What do these scrwes control and how do I know if there set correctly? Sorry for butting in deeps, I don't know much about carbs, but I do know that running them rich will add to deposits like Trent stated.

Re: Adjusting Carburetor

Okay... here's another question. How do I adjust my carburetor? I know there are two screws on my carb for adjustment. But how do I know how much to turn them or if I'm running lean or rich?

Should I screw them in all the way and them back them out a certain amount?
