I have a '88 Mercury Outboard that I suspect needs trim/tilt fluid added. With the engine all the way up, I took the screw cap off and couldn't see a fluid level.

How much fluid can I add to the trim/tilt without overfilling?

Thanks!

Try finding a stick and sticking it in the hole and see how far down the fluid is. I will warn you to fill it very slowly as it's easy to overfill and it makes a mess (green fluid all over the boat is a real pain) and it also costs about $8 or $9 a tube. Hope that helped.

You cannot overfill it. Fill it till it comes out the hole and put the screw back in. Cycle it several times and then check the level again. Top off as nessesary. You can also get T&T fluid at wallyworld for a few bucks.

The local Merc Shop here said to use 10-30 motor oil in it, and that you cannot overfill it. He advised using an oil can to fill it with, (like the tin man had in wizard of oz) Said a mess is avoided that way.
