New to I boats so please be kind. I have a 92 merc Classic , had the infamous rectifier burn up. Replaced damaged stuff, high voltage reading upper 17's w o t . I read on I boats about a 4 wire regulator ( ski doo) and ordered it. My concern is wiring it wrong. New regulator has 1 green, 1 yellow, 1 red and 1 black wire. My question is do I wire direct to my rectifier or to regulator then rectifier? Maybe a simple pix or drawing would help me ( I'm pretty simple when it comes to this) thanx in advance for any help.

Rectifiers can be separate or combined with a regulator in the same package. I have no idea what you purchased. If it is a separate regulator then you also need a new rectifier if that's what you burned up. Rectifiers convert the AC from the charging system to DC. That DC then passes to a regulator that regulates the charge going to the battery. So to answer your question, the regulator "input" is wired to the rectifier "output". The output of the regulator feeds the battery via the large Positive battery cable.

My question would be why buy the ski doo unit. CDI makes a regulator/rectifier for your motor that is a direct replacement for yours. Now you need two wiring diagrams one for skidoo and one mercury and figure out which wires are the same.

I had read on a I boat post about the ski doo regulator, damn if I can find it again ( rookie) and the gentleman stated this (ski doo ) regulator fixed his high voltage prob. On his Mercury classic , so I ordered it assuming There would be some sort of direction to follow . Maybe I should just look into c d I combo regulator/ rectifier.

Do you have a separate regulator and rectifier on the motor now. Is what you bought just a regulator or rectifier or a combination. It sounds like it's at least a rectifier If it is the wiring is probably like this green and yellow connect to the stator charging wires. Red goes to the battery cable and black to ground. But I can't say for sure because I don't know how many wires come out of the stataor.

I have a new rectifier only, the way I understand it is Mercury engines like mine where unregulated at the time mine was produced, I then had the electrical fire- replaced damaged wires and rectifier but still have high voltage ( which I assume caused fire) I'm thinking I'll try to post a pic later showing my wiring along w/ new regulator. I'm working now but if memory serves me I do have 2 yellow stator wires going to rectifier. Thanx for the help and patience.

My evinrude runs about 16 volts on an unregulated system. What kind of battery do you have those systems really only like the old style starting battery that can be maintained.I am only guessing at how the wiring goes and you will probably have the same probably with voltage because it will still be unregulated.

This will work........it contains both the rec and reg. It is spec'd to do 20 Amps @12VDC

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...EKB2JQ9C28HNB2

Yellow (any) to stator's yellow (any), tie both red together (local sense config). The point at where you tie the red's together is the +12VDC out. Bolt blk to ground/block through the reg body.

My question is do I wire direct to my rectifier or to regulator then rectifier?

Your new bought reg most likely has a rectifier internally already........

But before you order anything, lets look at what you have? Do you have any documentation, link, picture of the ski doo reg? I assume your stator is a two wire (yellow typically)

No Title

Here are some photos of my Mercury 40 hp classic 2 stroke 4 cyl. I'm attempting to wire in a regulator to my system to correct high voltage 17-18 w o t.

Providing I get the pro's blessing can I hook new regulator wires directly to studs on rectifier?

NO because what you bought is either a rectifier/regulator combo or another rectifier. What you have is NOT just a regulator so you have to remove the original rectifier to put what you bought in. It cannot be just a regulator because it has wires to attach to the stator. If it was just a regulator and you hooked it up it to the stator it would regulate AC voltage to the battery. You cannot put 2 rectifiers in series with each other so you need to remove the rectifier to install yours.

Ok, thank you gentleman. I think I'm semi straightened out. They sell the part I bought as a regulator but based on wires it's a rectifier regulator all in one. Sorry for my ignorance on the subject and once again thanx for all your help. I will update after I install and test.

Toddler How did the swap work out for you? I'm planning on doing the same on my 40 hp 4 cyl. There's a shop nearby that sells regulator/rectifiers intended for snowmobiles and they look exactly as yours does. Did it fit onto the same mounting bolts as the old lozenge-shaped rectifier? What voltage do you get?
