My motor currently is a manual tilt and would like to power it. I see lots of tilt and trim units on eBay for sale. Im curious what all is involved in converting it. Will one of the power units just bolt into my existing transom mounting brackets? And if anyone knows.... what models would work with my motor?

I went with a CMC unit myself, I have an 81 Evinrude 50 and figured that any trim unit I could get for it would be almost worn out so I went the CMC route.

They are a little pricey but they come with a warranty and they work right out of the box unlike anything you are likely to get off of Ebay and you don't need to take the engine mount apart to put it on as you would with the original unit and they come with all the wiring.

As I said, they are a little pricey but worth the money, i have run mine for 7-8 years without a single problem and would buy another one for sure.

One of those would be nice but its pretty pricey, would have a hard time dropping that cash on it when I traded $300 in guns for the entire rig. LOL

Another thing about the CMC unit though is that it seems used ones go for prices like 70 to 80% of new ones. Actual cost of the CMC unit would actually probably be less than a used trim/tilt unit (with possible repairs and rebuild) and a lot less hassle if you consider the used selling price you could get. If you think you might ever sell the unit they seem to hold their value and seem very easy to sell.

Hey thanks for the info, did you get the pt-130 and if so did you yous the holes that were there or did you drill new ones? I have a 79 evenrude 85-hp the old tilt and trim was done, did your previous tilt and trim have the three wire connection ?

I went right up to the existing holes no problem, they give you alot adjustment to so you Can get engine height just right.

Play with it a bit and you will get it right, I started all the way up and dropped a couple holes till it will just blow out in corners, you have to bump the trim down when you turn but it runs really nice, about 30 on a 16' heavy aluminum boat.

Re: Adding Power Tilt to 78 70hp Johnson

I'm in the midst of upgrading my 1989 Johnson 88 SPL with power TNT. I wanted to stay with the stock look. Found a rebuilt unit on ebay for $170 shipped, including the relay box and sending unit, got an ebay sourced harness and gauge for $20, and found the mid-section thrust pads (where the two trim cylinder rods hit the mid-section) on-line for $13/piece. The only other thing i need is a 3 way switch and 2 SS bolts. You can re-use the four bolts from the assist unit for a total of 6 bolts needed. It seems like the transom mounts are the same for both powered and assisted, so all required holes should be present. I've seen at least one other thread stating the transom mount doesn't need to be disassembled to fit the unit. I haven't tried yet, we'll see. Good luck with the project.

I have a 1980 70hp that I swaped the whole mounting bracket assy off a 115hp. Bolted right on.

However shy away from the 3 wire motors as they are a bastard, hard to repair & no replacement motors are available. The 2 wire motors mount up differently. Stick with the newer 2 wire motors.

Ended up finding a 2 wire unit on eBay, Id like to bench test it to make sure it works ok. Can I do that without all the other wiring hooked up. Also was wondering if anyone had a wiring diagram or could explain how these are hooked up, Im starting from scratch since the motor had no power before.

Hey, did the same as your doing to my 1978 Johnson 70hp. Motor on T&T unit should have 2 wires, a green and a blue. Blue to positive post of 12v battery and green to negative should extend the trim rams 1st and then the big tilt ram. Opposits retract. ;)

Did you get any of the other parts yet. Let me know if not. I have remainder of what you need. Wiring diagram too. I'll pm you when I get home tonight.

Hey Jeff, tried replying to your PM but it said you werent accepting them or something? But anyways...... That would be awsome Jeff, yeah I just got the unit itself so Id need all the rest of the stuff. It would be a huge help. I did bench test it yesterday and it looks like its working fine, thanks for the tip on that. I was thinking it grounded to the motor or something. LOL

Heres a picture of my controler.

Yah, thought I had the PM thing covered, but apparrently the option to override my settings doesn't work. I'll just add you to my contact list instead. That should fix it.

You have the same controller I was using, so the T&T switch I have will work. It just replaces the plastic top on the handle. I think it was made by TH Marine. I'll send you the particuliars by PM.

Glad to help,

Jeff

I hope I can get some help with this. Thanks for bumping your thread and asking charlie. I posted a new thread here today. It's title is 1979 70johnson rough idle and TNT install. There are pics there of the harness.

Re: Adding Power Tilt to 78 70hp Johnson

Ok, I think I can wire it. But where does the relay box go? and where does the remote switch go? This is the first motor with TNT that I have owned so I'm learning. Or trying to.

Between my motor & the neighbor's 3 70hp we found many different wiring & relay systems.

So I am pretty sure I can wire this PTT unit but I do not know where to put the PTT relay box. Where is this relay box generally located? Thanks
