I am new to boating, I bought a 1997 17' Sunbird model 170 Spirit with the original 115 hp Johnson motor. I cannot find where I add the engine oil. The Marina I bought it from told me it was an injector type, and to add oil to the oil tank on every gas fill up. I cannot find any place on the boat or on the engine to add oil, please advise.

Unless someone has converted the engine to run premix fuel, there should be an oil tank mounted in the back of the boat, usually under the splash well. You might want to take it back to the marina you bought it from and have them show you where the tank is so that you don't damage the engine from lack of oil.

The engine HAD an oil injection system when new but that doesn't mean it has not been removed turning the engine into a PREMIX motor. If the injection system is still in place you should see two hoses going into the engine. One is the fuel line and the other is the oil line from the remote mounted oil tank. If you only see one hose, the oil injection system has been removed and you MUST at oil to the fuel tank in a ratio of one pint of oil to each 6 gallons of fuel. Failure to do that will cost you an engine in a heartbeat. If both hoses are present, follow them. One will lead you to the oil tank. Since the boat is new to you, top off the oil in the remote resevoir. Use a marker to mark the oil level. When you have run the boat for a couple of hours or the equivalent of about 6 gallons of fuel, check the oil tank. If the oil level is dropping, the injection system is working. If not, there is an issue that MUST be corrected or again, that can cost you an engine.

Thank you so much for your response. There are many lines going to the motor, the gas line is easy to identify with the squeeze bulb, after that their are electrical lines, and steering lines, etc. consequently I am not 100% sure there is an oil line going into the motor. When i unscrew the cover on the splash deck it opens into a dry cavity that I assume to be the 'bilge" at the bottom of the cavity approx. 14" deep is what looks like an electric pump, probably the bilge pump. I do see two lines both wrapped in rubber, one is the gas line leading from the gas filling cap on the rear deck the other line runs parallel from the deck area and both lines go under the main deck of the boat out of site and out of reach with me removing deck sections. My next move is to take the boat to the marina where I purchased it to do this I need to drive the boat to a public dock about three miles by water. The engine starts easily, so I was wondering if I should mix some oil and gas and add it to my gas tank as a precaution. Comments ??

if you take the one large philps head screw out of the black plastic cover that the fuel line goes into on the front of the motor...you will see an amber colored plastic barb that the fuel lines hooks onto.

there are two of those plastic barbs...the second barb is for the oil line fromt he oil tank.
