Adding an outboard alternator ?

I remember seeing outboards on the Mississippi with humps on the cover that enclosed a hydraulic pump to operate winches, etc for fishermen.

Has anyone seen a similar application for adding an alternator to the top of an outboard? I'd like to add one to a sailboat kicker for keeping the batteries charged.
Thanks,

Theres a commercial guy here in town that has done that. He used the 3 bolt holes in the flywheel to mount a pulley that ran the hydraulic pump. I suppose you could do the same thing with an alternator. Merc OptiMax's do.

What motor do you have? It's possible there is an alternator already available for it, although most sailboat kicker alternators are in the 4-6 amp range... not enough to heavy duty charging...

- Scott

Yes, exactly like that. Very clean installation, almost looks like a factory job. I need to replace my kicker - the previous owner never checked cooling and fried it.

I'm going to be looking for something between 5 to 10HP, preferably 4-stroke for fuel efficiency and noise. Need to make sure it has open access to the top of the flywheel. Saw a nice little alternator on a small Kubota diesel garden tractor that should fit. I think it's about 40 amps, much better than the 6-12 amps on the outboard.

thanks,

I believe Nissan and Tohatsu both have a charging circit optional on 6hp 4 stroke
