2000 200hp Saltwater series on a Grady white Adventure.Never had a boat w/o a temp gauge and I dont like it that way.I dont do wiring so I have a very good Yammy tech that is going to do the job for me.He states that there is a kit for $179 from SIM corp.(gauge, sender, wiring harness etc)and he gets $250 labor.Sounds like a bit much but I am confident he will do the job and wiring properly. The gauge looks extremely simple and plain so I looked online and found a very nice looking Faria temp gage and sender for approx $75.The tech states that he will need to get a harness adapter to use the Faria gauge. What do you guys think.I am inclined to get the nicer looking gauge since the total cost is very similar.Anyone ever do any gauges and have an opinion??? Charlie

Not sure what a temp gauge buys you in an open loop cooling system.

What are you missing?

Open loop systems are all about flow (pressure). Water pump pushes water through the system. The thermostats regulate the flow to maintain the desired temperature.

To over heat, you either have failing water pump, a break in the cooling loop (hose, fitting), clogged cooling passage(s) or malfunctioning thermostat. All of which can be identified monitoring a pressure gauge.
Don't have to wait for the temperature to rise to identify a problem.

Which one is the nicer looking gauge?

Several ways to skin your cat. The Faria sender can be mounted so that it touches and measures a cylinder head. Or, it can be mounted where the Yamaha sender would be mounted. Into a port at the top of the cylinder head. But the Faria sender will be too small for the port. It is possible to drill and tap the plug that comes out of the cylinder head so that the Faria sender is then mounted where the Yamaha sender would be mounted.

The Yamaha sender and gauge are plug and play. Just some wires running from the Faria sender to the Faria gauge.

I know copper and aluminum are not what you want to touch each other,
since brass contains copper, I am not sure it is a good thing to use

Faria is a waaaayyyy nicer looking gauge.Yammy gauge looks like something from the 1970s,thats why I looked for something nicer. Thanks for the heads up though,I never considered the mounting of the sender being different.Charlie

Your reply gave me the info I didnt think of with the mounting of the sender being different than factory unit.I will stick with the factory plain looking unit as function is more important looks to me.Still cant believe that Grady White with a Yamaha motor didnt make a temp gauge as standard equipment. Thanks Charlie

Well as you see from a comment above, some don't feel the need for a temperature gauge. It would be a waste of time and money for Grady to spend time and money installing equipment that some don't want. That is why it was was offered as an option.

I disagree completely and always want a temp gauge on any boat I own. With Grady white being more of a premium boat ,I would expect a temp gauge as standard and not optional. For example the cleats and bow and stern eyes are 3x the size and quality they need to be as well as the rod and outrigger holders. They surely are not looking to cut time and money. Thanks again for the sender info!! you are just one person that feels that way about wanting one, that does not mean every boat and motor has to be sold with one.

you want one, install it and go about your day
