adding a second battery

Could someone explain how a novice like me can add a second battery to my boat for trolling/accessories and have the alternator on my motor charge it and the starting battery? Tohatsu 40 TLDI.

You will need a battery switch to do this safely and the switch will come with instructions.

Is there a certain one I need to look for. I think the alternator on that motor is 23A.

There are basically two types of battery switches. One is simply and ON-OFF switch for the start battery. The other looks similar but has OFF-BAT1-BOTH-BAT 2 settings. That's the one you want. Get it right here on iBoats.

Once you get this battery switch, make sure you don't inadvertantly turn the switch to "Off" while the motor is running.
