Add Tiller control to 25hp NS3?

Hello all, Haven't been on the board all summer because my 25hp Nissan NS3 is running beautifully. I never once took the engine cover off. Getting ready to take the motor off the boat and store indoors for the winter. I'm seriously considering adding a tiller control to my motor and re-arranging the interior of my 16ft SeaNymph to free up more room for fishing.
I've seen similar motors with this set up. Just wondering how difficult is the task (to add tiller control) and if any dealers on the board (Paul, Guru, etc) could PM me some prices?

Welcome back TR,

Will need to buy lots of spare parts if you happen to have just an empty interior throttle mechanism in which only the advancer arm is linked to the throttle cable Post pics of what you currently have, will need to add a compete tiller assy besides along interior throttle parts. Tohatsu has a simple and friendlly throttle mechanism to install, play with as opposed to other brands OB..

Thanks Luis,

I can't add any pictures just yet, because I might make a few more runs before winter (we're having a nice run of weather) and I don't want to jinx my motor by taking the lid off.

Currently: I have remote throttle and steering controls. There is a place on the swivel to add a tiller handle.

I'd like to add a tiller handle with throttle control at the tiller handle and probably a starter button on the motor for the electric start.

I'd like the option to eliminate the remote controls and use the tiller for throttle and steering but then be able to add the controls again later if I change plans.

Paul, are you saying there are aftermarket kits to do this?

thanks
rob

If I understand, you want to convert a Remote motor to Tiller/Electric. No kits I am aware of. Lost of bits needed. If you can locate a donor motor, it should go smoothly. Otherwise, you will need to look over the parts catalog and order individual parts.

Thanks Paul, that is exactly what I want to accomplish.
Will tillers assemblies from the 9.9 thru 30 motors of different vintages work?
I can probably figure out a way to rig up the starter button / switch.

Rob,

Which model/ series is your 25/30 HP OB ? C2-C3. If it's a steering model and converted to remote can place/remove tiller arm any time you want, just remove throttle, gear and steering cable linkages from OB, put to a side preferably under tiller. Does your current model has a protruding white pinion seen front of steering shaft ? If not, will need all the parts that connects ext pinion to advancer arm + complete tiller arm assy.

There's a place up front pan to install a electric start switch.

It's a C3 model.
I went to the parts catalog and there are a lot of small parts involved, washers, grommets, etc. I added everything up, including the handle, grip, shaft, etc. and it totaled $163.24 which doesn't seem too bad. Does this sound about right?
thanks again

Tiller system uses lots of mechanical simple parts. Price seems fair,

Winter is here and so it's project time.
The motor is off the boat and tucked safe and warm in my basement.

Main projects this winter will be:
1: Add tiller handle / assembly to my 25C3 outboard.
2: Change reeds to Boysen reeds.

I have the factory manual for the motor and the parts manual.
Trying to figure out what's included with Tohatsu part # 3A1563000-0?
Also, got another part #3P0S630000.
Both are listed for a "Handle Kit"?
Anybody know if this will be all I need to convert to a tiller?
I can't find a picture of the kit anywhere. Thinking that maybe it's just the handle part but not the pinion, linkage, etc?
Any help appreciated.
Donor motors are next to impossible to source. If anybody has a line on one, I'm interested.
I'll have questions about the reed job once I get things apart.
thanks

Just a follow up to my original post..
Never did source the tiller assembly but I got the new reeds installed.
This is the best <$50 mod you might consider if you have one of these motors.
The reeds are dual stage. It's a pretty easy upgrade.
This mod smoothed out my idle and added 2 mph. to the top end.
Had to back the fuel / air screw out about a 1/4 turn after assembly.
Took boat out for a test run yesterday, seems fine.
Still looking for input on tiller assembly.
thanks

You can get more tops peed by going 1-2 less prop pitches. Have found that at least on Tohatsu newer 25-30 HP OB's, are comming with incorrect medium pitchc props, that's with a 13 that produces 1K revs less that max wot 5800 revs on a light boat lightly loaded. We're changing for 11 pitch to produce max top revs. What's the current prop pitch installed on that OB of yours ?

Does you OB has the front protruding part where pinion exists and joins with tiller handle rear pinion ? If doesn't, can't install a tiller handle.

Louis,
Thanks for your response. My motor had a 10 pitch prop when I got it. It had a great hole shot but was pretty chewed up. I changed to an 11 pitch last summer and that's what's on it now.
My motor has the protruding part to install a tiller but I'm having trouble sourcing the parts.

TR, usually tach all OB's HP with an induction tach to know if factory delivered prop works at it's max wot rpm range, if not, usually go 1-2 less pitch sizes to pull up my wot revs. Assume you haven't tached that 10 pitch prop before being chewed-up. A 11 pitch will lower hole shot and increase top speed a bit compared to a 10 pitch. Probably replacing by same 10 pitch was the way to go, but without a tach installed impossible to know if at wot performed spot on.

Check tiller mechanism parts at : boatsdotnet..

Used a Tiny Tach last season. RPMs seemed to be spot on with the 11. I'll check it again next time out.
Trying to figure out if Tohatsu part # 3POS630000 will include everything I need?
thanks again.
