Add Schrader valve to 1989 70?

My 1989 Johnson 70 does not have the Schrader valve on the primer solenoid for easy fogging / decarbing. From a quick look, it appears that I could simply get a later valve handle, cover, and o-ring (parts 11, 11A, and 12 here: http://www.crowleymarine.com/brp_parts/diagrams/10223.cfm) and pop them in. The adjacent part numbers seem to be the same on this 1991 diagram and the 1989.

It looks like the valve handle would come out once you took the cover plate (#6 in the diagram) off. I'd probably need to replace the gasket too.

Has anyone done this? Any problems? Anything going to go sproing and send small parts off into the weeds if I take this apart?

Thanks for any info - it's only a minor convenience, but the parts are pretty cheap.

Tedious, I'm wondering the same thing about my '90 J150. Fogged it thru the carbs this year, but it'd be nice to fog thru the primer. I'll monitor your thread and feedback any info I get - Good luck

It's part number 175158 from your local BRP dealer, or Sierra aftermarket part 18-0871 if you want to pay the shipping.

Thanks - I have the part numbers, just looking for advice as to whether this is practical, and for any difficulties in getting it apart / putting it back together.

Tim,
I have a '92 70hp, the little nipples for the fuel lines got broken. My local dealer had that valve in stock. Remove the four screws and the gasket, replace with new. What you need comes in the box.
You'll be done before you finish that beer!

Thanks Wayne - just what I needed to know. As noted in the original post, I had already cross-referenced all the parts and it LOOKED to be an easy job, but better to have the advice of someone who has done it.

I'll order the parts and give it a try in the spring - don't want to monkey with it in the cold.

Update: I got the Sierra part, and the directions make it look easy. They don't even have you replace the gasket, just back out the solenoid cover screws enough to remove the valve, and insert the new one. Won't get a chance to try it until spring as the motor is shrinkwrapped, but it's looking good!

I made this change to my 1988 40 hp Evinrude. Works just fine.

Re: Add Schrader valve to 1989 70?

To johnhot: Dealers have hoses to fit the valves once installed. They are called "Injector Valve and Hose Assembly" Part Number 763644.

The part allows both the BRP fogging oil and carbon treatment to be injected quickly using the aerosol cans.

Don't worry, it won't break the budget: http://shop.evinrude.com/dyn_prod.php?p=763644&k=116692
