Adapter Question

Well I got my new boat yesterday. Explorer pulls it like a pro. Only problem is my towing package came with a 4 prong plug. My boat has 5 prongs. The one extra is for the surge brakes on the trailer. I do have a little tool that goes in a slot to prevent the brakes from locking up. Here is my question. Is there not a adapterr that takes the 5 prong down to a 4? The guys at the dealership says there isn't. Is this true? I find it hard to believe, but with my luck I will believe anything. I sure hate to have to get the thing re-wired.

Re: Adapter Question

No adapter for the direction you need. They may possibly make one for a 5 pole vehicle to a 4 pole trailer but not the other way around. Besides, you should wire a 5 plug connector into your vehicle so that your trailer brakes are disabled while you reverse and not have to manually disable the surge unit with your tool.

If you decide not to rewire:

You should be able to plug the five into the 4 with the last pin hanging over the end. The last pin is the reverse lights.

You can also just make your own adapter by buying a 4 and a 5 pole plug and soldering them together, leaving the fifth wire disconnected..

Re: Adapter Question

They do make a 4 to 5 pin adater for the truck end, it plugs into the 4 pin receiver on your truck and then there is one wire that you splice into your back up light wire, with the included inline splce clip thingy, am sure there is abetter name for it. it took me a while to find it but finaally found it at oreilly or autozone not sure which. then went online to find the wire color codes for my f150. installation waas a breeze took longer backing hte truck into the garAage and getting under the truck than it did to splice the wire in. In the meantime just plug it in as is with the last trailer prong exposed, works just fine.

Re: Adapter Question

They way I did mine was I took a piece of wire and connected it to the reverse wire in the rear lamp of vehicle. Run the wire down with the 4 way flat, then plug the 4 way to trailer and single wire into the brake wire.
