I have a 71 year model 60ES71 (electric shift) with the lower unit missing. I have a lower unit off of a Johnson (Evinrude maybe?) with model number J50BELCM on engine model tag.Is this an electric shift model? Is it possible to fit any mechanical lower unit to this engine? Power head looks new to slightly used, but hesitate to put a lot of mone into this old an engine.

No, it will not work. Electric shift upper ends, do not have the provisions to adapt a manual shift, drive shaft splines different, and many etc's.

Yes, it is possible. A friend of mine bought a pary barge recently and got the Johnson motor (50 hp)late model that came on it as a spare. It had blown due to failure of oil injection. He also got a 50hp Johnson (installed on the bardge) with an es in the serial number and manufactured during the ES era. His older motor appeared appeared to have been recently rebuilt and runs great but no longer has electric shift. We scratched our head and from the same puke green, similiarly faded colors cannot tell the lower unit has been changed, but it has to have been as it now has manual shift. A dealer must have made the change as it still bears the SN of an electric shift unit and has spare terminals on his electric connections for the shift mech. His motor is probably, if I remember a 75 or 76. If you were close to Arkansas I would put you in touch with Dave. Your lower end and his are all compatable in those years from 50hp up. Its probably going to be for sale soon if the rebuild on his new engine with trim works out. The powerhead on his 90s engine and his 7? engine are mechanical almost identical. Let me know if you want his tn. Ron

My '76 V6 Evinrude is changed to a manual shift but the intake manifold had to be changed to accomodate the shift linkage.

c/6

Hooty

Ben, do you have a linkage shift L/U for that motor already. If not then it will probably cost more to convert than what you can get the electric L/U for. I've got one setting in my shop gathering dust.
