...on a Dell Laptop, with a seperate XP disc? I know that you can reload the operatating system with an F key function, from a seperate partition.

But for XP Home, you are supposed to load the XP CD to retrieve the XP backup program.

This is one of the malware infected computers and I want to give my wife an easy to use backup function for her various folders that she should back up.

Currently, I have just had her go and copy all the folders and paste them to an external harddrive but she never remembers how to do it.

Now that we are going to try to rid her computer of the malwares, we should get this done.

Re: Activating XPBackup.....

Sorry this has gone a while with no response. I hope you're still looking for a solution. You are correct the Windows XP backup utility is not installed with the the Home version of WinXP by default, nor can it be added in Add/Remove Programs. Instead you will need to do the following:

1) Boot your PC. (If it's already up and running procede to Step #2)

2) Insert the CD Rom (If the windows install window pops up just close it)

3) navigate to <CD-ROM Drive>:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP

4) Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file to start the wizard that installs Backup

5) When the wizard is complete, click Finish.

You should be all set. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Saw your PM shrew, thanks.

Got the Mrs's laptop cleared of her malware problem, now it is time to get back to the easy backup so she can be prepared for any future issues.

Can I get that file off of an XP CD? Her laptop is a Dell and it has the reloadable OS on a seperate partition. We have no CD for XP Home but I do have one for XP Pro. I wouldn't know how to access any files from that partitioned OS system.
