1995 yamaha C55TLRT, 2 stroke, 2 cylinder.

trying to figure out why i do not idle very well, stall at low rpm in drive, such as when trying to load on the trailer (even made me jump the trailer and corners gouged the crap outa my hull) and the low rpm stutter i posted about last week. already cleaned the carbs again, and nothing still beautiful inside.
so I tried to set the timing as the YAMAHA book says to. In one of the sections it says
"adjust the length of the accelerator link properly and connect one of them to magneto control lever 3 and the other to accelerator cam ball joint
the adjustment the book gives me is 5.45 inches outside measurement. but when i try to do this its almost as if the metal bar is too long and i can get it to just shy of 5 9/16in. at that point its also expanding the little plastic clips to the point they look like they will break and the bar will actually push into the round area and almost prevent the ball from being push into it. so am i doing something wrong or should i just leave this alone and as is?

attached are the pic of the bar I'm talking about and the little plastic clip. the first pic is of it being down as far as i could get it. then one of the plastic clip that looks like its about to burst
