I bought a 5 horse 4 stroke short shaft from my neighbor who told me he thought it was a '97 or so. That might be so because I don't remember what the dealer told me when I ordered the rebuilt kit for the carb, spark plug, fuel filter and new recoil starter assembly.
I think I put everything where it goes as I did get it started and it does idle, go into gear and seems pretty smooth...in a water filled bucket! Haven't truly water tested it yet but I believe it'll run. My question is what are the two wires, one red and the other black, that go from somewhere inside the cowling to a black rubber 2 pin connector (with a cover) outside the cowling mounted to the right of the stick? Any ideas? I sure would appreciate even a guess!! Thanks!

Yep, it's an accessory plug. It will run low amp stuff like lights, depth finder, etc.

The RED is positive, the Black is negative.

The Honda dealer can get the male end of the plug but it ain't cheap.

I "went around it" on my Dad's 8 HP.

We use the "8" for trolling. Running about 1/2 throttle it will charge a dead battery (enough to start a big engine) in an hour or so.

Re: Absolutely lost...please help!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have a five horse short shaft Honda with a (downloaded for FREE) owner's manual from the site I was so kindly directed to. It turns out that the motor does, indeed, have an optional accessory charging port just like I was told it did.

I am SO happy that this place found me! I was afloat while being dinghy because I didn't take the time to do anything but make it run before I got all fired up about the little stuff. I mean fired up in a good way, too...excited. I did take the time to get the canoe registered (square stern) so I can run a power plant on it. I was unsure about what was what because someone told me I had to register it even if I only used a trolling motor. So, whether I use the Honda or the trolling motor, I am covered. I also have pfd's, a fire extinguisher, oars, running/anchor lights and....an anchor!! Woo-Hoo, I am ready! Now, I can use powered lights instead of the clamp on battery op ones I already have!

I hope to spend a lot of time here with y'all whenever the weather breaks and I'm not fishing using the newly discovered power!! You guys are great! Thanks, again!
