If dash cams are worth it.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=520682&highlight=camera

As referenced in this locked thread about installing dash cams in company vehicles, the company I work for has them. We're about to see if they are worth it.
Last night a lady tried to pass one of our trucks on the right as it was turning into a parking lot. She had a flat tire and bent fender on her car, but still had to be taken away by ambulance. Now the police came and rightfullytook statements and issued her a ticket before she was carried off. However, the ticketed party is not always held 100% liable for damages. So if she files a claim against our insurance carrier, hopefully the video will vindicate our driver and get her company to pay for our minor damages.

I'll keep you posted to the best of my ability.

Well, you can look at it as evil and intrusive if you want. But in the meantime I have a co-worker who is glad that he will have definitive backup to his statement. Otherwise, it's a "he said/she said" and he could be fired. Dashcam will protect him in this case, cause he was in the right.

Commercial trucks just don't need dash cams, they need two fender cams pointing backwards!

Re: About to find out...

cameras are becoming a great way for insurance companies to fight liability, your company may even find that its premiums go down or some other compensation by the insurance carrier for putting cameras in your trucks.

We are seeing cameras on Law Enforcement personnel now, took a little bit of convincing to some but think about it, what better way to back up an Officer involved in a shooting then to put the video up and watch the family lawyer close his files right in front of everyone. Sad days but this is a great way to limit ones liability in some maybe even most cases.

Here your Honor is a video of what happened for you to see and make your decision. I'm not saying it will help every case that's not likely but I think we have all seen those videos where anyone in their right mind has said "by god shoot that guy!" or "why would anyone want to be a LEO when you have to deal with HER!", of course you also have the "WHY IS THIS GUY A COP?" I bet that the biggest reason why LEO's have cameras in their cars and now on their person is not to find bad cops but to back up Cops dealing with bad/unethical persons, why would a company think any different, but if your a bad employee its not good for you either, cop or not.

As to trucks, when size no longer becomes the determining factor of a stupid move I think truck drivers certainly need video to back them up, we have all seen it, soccer mom on the phone cuts in front of John Q tractor driver and slams on her brakes because of traffic, enter horrible result here, people just don't care or have dollar signs in their eyes and truckers rarely win the legal battle.

We had cameras on the transit busses I worked on. One of them was a "dash cam", the others covered the inside of the bus. They did come in handy protecting a couple of drivers who were in accidents. The one time they really paid off was when we had a driver get severly beaten by two young punks. The cops had nice clear video, with sound of the beating. Needless to say, they were promptly identified and prosecuted for the assalt. I'm not saying I'd want them on any company vehicle I was driving, but they do come in handy sometimes.

The boss told me the video will go directly to the Safety Department, but then to him. I think he'll let us all see it, especially for training purposes.
