this style of carb. is noted for "leaking" a little fuel when choked. If you look at the bottom of the upper housing under the carb. inlets, you will see that Merc. designed a catch basin with a hose to drain the excessive fuel... Now, with that said, a carb. rebuild is not a major job, check and see if they are still leaking while the engine is running. My bet is they are not, if they still are order two kits with floats and go for it.

Stormmn, That carb was not designed nor noted for leaking fuel. The basin is to catch fuel when the motor is tilted up.

Charlie, You do need to rebuild the carbs. Remove them, take them apart and soak them in a carb cleaner solution. Blow out all passages with compressed air and install new gaskets, inlet needle and seat, and new floats.

A service manual will assist you greatly in this repair. You might take a compression test and spark test to see if the carbs are the only issue.

There are fuel filters on one model of carbcarb-filter.jpg,if you have this type of carb undo the fuel line and check for blockage. My lower one was blocked so I removed the screen. There is a screen at the fuel pump anyway.

I am certainly with Chris on this one, especially the new floats and carb overhaul. Floats must float. Been there, found that.
