I have a 1986 alpha sterndrive. I'm in the process of replacing the lower shift cable. I have the latest number from quicksilver. I downloaded the manual from the adult section. It says to install the cable thru the alum shift fork.tighten the allen head screw just so it touches the cable end and u should still be able to turn the cable in the shifter. This cable when i feed it thru the shift it Appears to lock in place. Is this normal?

No it's not normal. Sounds like you bought an aftermarket cable and not an OEM cable. They always hang up somewhere, bind, and ........... never mind.

tighten the allen head screw just so it touches the cable end and u should still be able to turn the cable in the shifter.

Back the screw off 1/2 turn. You have it too tight.

I have to back off the allen set screw almost 3 turns, Then i have to push the cable slightly out to get the shifter to turn on the cable. Even if i just remove the set screw and gently pull out on the shifter it still doesn't turn. I went to my local marina where i got the cable and he says it's normal. The new shift cable has a square end that locks into the shifter

Does the inner cable have a black teflon coating on it?

yes it does. And the white tube unscrews from the brass nut. So i didn't require the special socket. The guy at the marina said the cable was the newest number and it just came in last week

Well, it's not right. If it's binding like that, it will cause all kinds of problems with shifting.
You are using the new end that came with the cable aren't you?

So it sounds like you either need the older style cable with the round crimp, or a newer style shift slide that will accomodate the new crimp.

I wonder what the ID is on the newer slide... and if the older 1 can be drilled out.... hmmmmm

The cable should have come with a new slide.
If trying to use some old parts with the new cable, you ARE going to have problems.
If you didn't get a packet that has new ends for both ends of the cable and all the associated hardware, then you didn't get what you paid for.

You need to take it back and get a new one.
When you run the cable through the slide and run that screw down till it contacts the end, you should only have to back the screw out 1/4 to 1/2 turn and the slide should turn freely on the cable. There is a defect there somewhere.
