Greetings all, I just wanted to give a word of thanks to all that responded to my questions about rebuilding my 1990 40 hp Johnny. I used a manual but the info gleaned from this site was invaluable. This was my first rebuild and so I was a little apprehensive, but I took my time, used a camera before dissasembly, studied my manual, and asked questions here. The result?, it fired up and ran like a sewing machine on the first turn of the key. Now I'm looking forward to breaking it in and going fishing again.

Nice job Dave. I'm thinking of doing the same. If I may ask what is your background as far as being a mechanically inclined person? Thanks

Re: a word of thanks

Hey Dude, I,ve swapped out a motor on a Yamaha Waverunner before, but never tackled a complete rebuild. However, I love getting out to my little shop in the backyard. I asked a lot of questions both here and from the machine shop that did the boring, and the dealership where I ordered my gasket kit, etc. Just take your time, Take pictures, and check and recheck as you go. Actually, I discovered how simple a two stroke engine works and hopefully now I can handle any future problems( knock on wood) that ight arise. But go for it, the satisfaction alone was worth it, not to mention the money saved( about $600).

Dave, Thanks for the encouragement. You said you had to have it bored. Was that because the cylinders were out of round or were they tapered.<br />How much were the cylinders out and how much did you have the shop remove? Thanks again
