You may have seen my post requesting prayer for wife and daughter of a couple of our workers. Well, I accompanied the one worker and his wife to the hospital, and here is our tale:

We arrived at 3:30 in the afternoon to be scolded by the first nurse we saw. "You came to the wrong department, that is too serious for us!" I apologized, and asked her where we were to go, because we did not know. Her response, "just up the road."

We went up the road to the surgical block, where she told us to go, and they sent us elsewhere. Rachael, the wife of the worker, ended up walking about a mile because of the runaround.

We get to where we are supposed to be, and the nurse yells at us, "Where is your folder?" Then she points to an office, where we must purchase a folder that will contain all her records.

Back to the nurse with the folder, and she tells us to sit down. We do, for about an hour before anyone comes to do anything. While we are sitting there, it gives a good time to look around at the dirt and body fluids on the floor, the beds with no sheets (you must bring your own sheets if you are going to the hospital), the guerneys in the hallway with people lying on them, there are 3 advanced AIDS patients in the wing.

Anyway, an hour later they take pulse, BP, and temp. An hour later, a "doctor" (we later learn he is an intern comes, and he askes a few questions and leaves.

Then some time later there are a few more questions, and she is taken to an exam room, and we are not allowed to go in. The intern goes in, and keeps coming out about every 10 minutes and talking to the other interns that are there, but he won't answer any of our questions.

Finally, he comes out, comes over to us and tells us it is time for him to leave, he hopes we have a good evening, and he is gone. Will not talk to us other than to say the doctor will discuss things with us.

Doctor comes over about 8:30 and tells us they are going to take a chest x-ray, blood, stool, and urine sample, and we must get some medication. You must pay for all of this before anything is done.

Doctor leaves without telling us anything, and we start to get the meds and the tests. About this time I see a patient in the corner code (flatlined, died, however you want to say it). No one notices, or acts like it! I tell one of the nurses, but she doesn't seem to care, nor do anything.

Got the tests finished at 9:30, and went to see the doctor, but she left for the night. Ended up leaving Rachael there in the hospital, with the dead guy in the corner!

It certainly isn't the care that we expect in the US, and this was at a major TEACHING Hospital. This is what they are teaching.

The next day my worker brought his wife home, with her records. No where on the records did they officially diagnos anything, and there treatment was off base, according to the test results (verified my fellings with several doctor friends I know, and they all agreed with me).

So, we are treating Rachael in house - no more hospital visits for any of my workers! If you know any doctors that want to come on a medical mission, we have the place and room for them!

Just goes to show that our medical system in the USA, isn't as skrewed up as everyone thinks.

I feel sorry for those in thew world who don't have organized medicine, and I find it hard to believe that in this day and age, that the whole world doesn't have better medical coverage.

Just my .02 cents, is all.

That's shocking Aspeck - sounds like they place very little value on human life. I hope she ends up getting the treatment she needs...somehow. :(

It would cause me to wonder, what would happen if you yourself needed emergency medical treatment in a place like that ?

Re: A Trip to the Emergency room

Flatbottoms, I didn't post this as a solicitation, just to let you know how some others have to live, and what they have to deal with. If you really want to help, send me an email, and I will give you some info.

Kiwi, I have a little bit of medical experience, when I am stateside I do the Fire/Rescue/Ambulance thing. Have a trama kit here, and also have a couple of Doctor friends that will come at a moments notice (they are also helping the locals in other villages). It is a bit of a scary proposition, though.

Travel on the highway with my trama kit, has come in handy at accident scenes (gloves are a necessity because about 1 in 4 people carry HIV).

Yes, there is little value put on life. It is all part of the circle.

And Soulwinner, you are right, prayer is the greatest asset we have! In the states we say grace as a custom, here it is a necessity.

But in the end, it is so rewarding to help others, and that is what it is all about.

Re: A Trip to the Emergency room

Wow, I am so glad I live inb a small community. Anyone walks into this hospital they are immediately the center of attention. They will have the attention of at least 2 nurses, one CNA, a nurse practitioner, and a PA. Within 15 minutes a doctor will arrive and make sure everything has been done.
With the current economy it looks like this hospital will shut down within a year, but the hospital in the next town over is almost as good.

Good luck to you and yours. All of our prayers will be with you.

aspeck, is it just their lack of value for human life or is it an attitude that pervades their life in general? Either way it's pretty scary.

Do the locals that you deal with develop a better ethic or are they indistinguisable from the others in those respects?

It would really free up a lot
of time for the doctors to work on patients
in real need of immediate care.

Hi aspeck,

I'm just wondering where you come up with 1 in 4 carrying HIV. I did some research because it didn't sound right, and the stats come nowhere near that.

Ghana HIV stats

Basically, if you are a sex worker, yes, you have HIV AIDS, otherwise, the % is more like 4%.

Its obviously a very serious issue, as here in the States the prevalence is more like .6%, but I thought I'd point out the difference.

Re: A Trip to the Emergency room

well, around here its hit & miss. we went to the same hosp my daughter was born 5yrs ago. she broke her arm sat night during a sleepover with her best friend in kindergarten. running in socks on our kitchen floor. we left home 10:30pm got back @12am. only spent @45mins total onsite. they prioritize fractures & children, hardly ever sat in one place...

6mos after she was born, we waited around in same ER 3hrs for my wife to get checked out for kidney stones... i was ready to go postal- you can imagine how my wife felt ;)

i pray for your situation to improve over there aspeck.

we went to specialist today, and sadly, my girl has to wait another week to get the pink cast she's reqstd. too much swelling at the elbow where she broke it. but i did get a day off work :) and we went out for dinner. and my wife made fun of the job i did fixing my daughters hair to go out to the doctor's appt. i claimed i tried, but really left it like it was when she woke up :D

Re: A Trip to the Emergency room

theriver, just going by what the medical profession over here states, but from experience with them, you can see they are not very believeable. Personally I have always felt it was more like 1 in 8 or 10, but that is just from personal observation. Most of our workers have had one or more family members die from AIDS. Whatever the actual statistics, it is bad.

Boomyal, I guess it is as much an attitude that pervades life in general, and yes, it takes time, but you can see a change in the people we are working with, and also in their families, and that goes to their friends. We had one man come here saying that he had seen such a difference in his friend, and he wanted that difference also.

Re: A Trip to the Emergency room

In some other countries in Africa its over 25%, like Zimbabwe and Botswana. Even South Africa reports 1 in 5 adult HIV/AIDS stats. A very sad situation indeed.
