A sometimes overlooked problem

I have noticed many posts about weak or no spark on older outboards. I seldom see anyone mention the fact that sometimes the points will get a glaze over them and to lightly clean them with a small file, emery board or sandpaper before regapping and checking. This glazing can also cause weak or no spark and is much less costly than replacing parts only to find that was all it was.
I have gotten many old outboards running by just cleaning and regapping where neccessary.

Middleground,
I do agree that the other approach is also valid. I just brought up the point to let people know they can try that before sinking money into motor when they do not know if it is worth fixing or not. At least it may get it started so they can check compression and listen for those annoying little knocks.
