Hi, I'm new to the forum. I'm a writer/publisher and in the novella I'm writing my main character plans on getting away from it all for a while by purchasing a sailboat and sail around the world. He's really going to fake it and just hug the coasts and travel around North and South America. Could someone tell me what size and what sailboat would be best to achieve this? It can actually be a bit more luxurious than a real around the worlder would be since he wants a bit of comfort. The character is a very successful and wealthy writer with five million dollars. He also plans on hiring a captain. Could someone tell me the size boat needed, the brand, the approximate cost of the boat and what such captains charge. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: A Sailboat Question

If I were going to do such a trip (and I want to) I'd go with a 60' Beneteau, probably in the $350,000 range. Plus or minus $100k for options.

If I was "a very successful and wealthy writer with five million dollars and who also plans on hiring a captain"...I wouldn't buy anything. I'd pick up the phone and charter a boat and skipper. There are all kinds of charter orgs around, and one call gets it all done.

This guy just went fishing

We have taken the bait and have the hook deep in our mouths

As exhaustion sets in I can start to see his boat on the surface get bigger and bigger as I fight against the line.
