Does anyone have a close up pic of their 1975 mercruiser 165 hp outdrive? I'm thinking mine has been swapped out at some time.

Looks like it might be newer. What are the serial numbers on the drive and transom? That is the best way to tell.

tanks bondo, appreciate it. Looks like some swappin' been goin' on, thumpar. Serial #6908686 puts it in the 1983-90 alpha 1,R,MR range.

What you have there is pre '76 transom housing, a 1985 drive shaft housing (top half of the drive) and a gear housing (lower half of the drive) from between 1975 and 1982). Given that the you're saying 1975 in the title leads me to think the transom housing and the gear housing are original, just the drive shaft housing has been replaced at some stage. And that's not a bad thing. The MR drive shaft housings had the stronger gearset. And as it's already stamped with the ratio (1.65) that then leads me to think it was a second hand replacement, not a housing built up....

Thanks Chris, I'm glad it's been upgraded if it's got a stronger set of gears. I'd like to know the style of the 1975 decals on the sides of the upper gear to try to keep the outdrive kinda period correct looking for the '75 boat. jim
