A newbie question :)

Hello! I have recently bought a boat that has a 60HP outboard Mercury engine.
Here is a really silly simple question.
I have some oil that the marine shop sold me (really expensive!) for mixing with my fuel.
What is the correct/best ratio of gas (unleaded?) to oil?
I have heard 50 to one (fuel to oil).. Is that correct?
Up here in Canada, we deal in litres.. hmm.. I wish there was an automated calculator or something

Thanks!

Wal-Mart's Super Tech brand is excellent and low priced.

Red sky at night. . .
JB "

Hope this helps.....

------------------
"Keep It Between The Bouys" & "Good Luck"!!!

fone_man

Howdy, Craig. The "standard" 6 US gallon tank holds close enough to 50 litres so that 1 litre of oil to a tank should be fine. Of course, if you buy the oil in pints rather than litres, use 1 pint to a 6 US gallon tank.

Red sky at night. . .
JB

Above, JB made a mistake, you run this mixture and you'll breath smoke all day and foul plugs eventually. 6 gallons is approximately 23 liters, this would require 1 pt or about 1/2 liter of oil. One liter of oil will treat 50 liters of gas, about 13 gallons.

Danged metric system!! Give those who use it an inch...and they want a mile.

I just checked a fairly new Quicksilver oil bottle...it has a mixing ratio chart...but it's all US standard values. Guess you'll have to do the conversion thing.

Oh, by the way. Marine dealers will charge you up the ying-yang for many products you can buy at an auto parts store, sporting goods store, or department store.

By the way...what year is your Merc 60 hp??

Walt
