Just want to do a quick follow-up on a post I made inquiring about the right HP for a 16' V-hull for just getting the family out on the water. First, I did get a lot of posts helping out - especially looking out to make sure I didn't get taken advantage of. Based on the posts, I took the old existing motor in (an old Merc 650.) It was beyond repair with the $$$ I had (bad lower unit, power harness, cylinders off, etc... probably anybody's checkbook.) However, Rex did say he would trade a 30HP for it. I told him everything that was wrong with it, but since he could get some use out of it (for parts) and since he wanted to help get us started with our own family fishing memories, he agreed to trade. After a lot of conversations I made the cross-state trip to trade and made a friend while I was at it. The motor he traded was everything he said it was. I took it to the shop and had some minor repairs and tune-up done to it and just over $500 later I now have a dependable 30Hp for my boat. I want to let it be known that there are still GOOD, unselfish, and kind people in this world and that Rex A. H. is one of them!

There were also some others who talked on the safety of keeping to the correct number of people on a boat. I still haven't found out the answer to the capacity limit on my boat but this is also valuable and caring advice that I appreciate!

This is a great forum. I wish I had time to read it more regularly. Thanx :)

I think you will find that most of the people on this forum are very helpful and friendly. It is also true at most marinas, with a very few exceptions you'll find that if you need a helping hand you will get it.Sometimes I'd rather help someone with their boat than work on my own.

Hi Fisn4fun

I hope you will have a great time with your wife and kids. It sounds like you found a sixe of motor that can give you som funhrs too. It should even be possible to drag the kids in a tube after the boat now. Normally a 16´ open boat carries up to 5 adult persons, with some gear, or a weight similar too this. you should have no problems whit this. Have a nice summer !! Here in Denmark we are still waiting for the weather to get just a bit warmer, we still have frost nights.

G Dane. Funny thing... my Mom's a Dane. Half my family is over there. I just visited over Christmas/New Years. Couldn't believe the fireworks in Copenhagen! The snow and fireworks were a great combination. When we drove up from Germany we passed a small Gas station with tons of HUGE crank baits. I am curious, what kind of fish do you catch on those? There were 10 inch baits as far as you could see. I guessed at Torsk but I don't know how big they get. One day I wouldn't mind doing some fishing over your way.

Just finished a boating course and the ratio to find out your person capacity is Length x Width devided by 15. This is the ratio that most marine units use to calculate if you don't have anything showing the capacity.
