Re: A good canoe motor?
No, they are much too powerful for a side mount. Motor weight is a very serious problem with a canoe, hey, why else is my tinney so fat at the stern. I have a 16' 6" square stern freighter that I use for hunting. This Clipper canoe is just a 18' 6" freighter with 2' cut off.I use a 4.5HP Merc with it. It is too damm powerful. A slight wrong move and both it and me get wet.In fact twice so far. Those 1 1/2 hp motors would be more than enough, even for me.
Hey all! I'm new (don't worry though! I know how to search!).
Anyways, I wanted to share what I've got goin on with my rig.
I'm carrying an 18' coleman, with a BPS (bass pro shop) 30lbs trolling motor which is side mounted (I made a custom bracket for it, cost me $10 instead of $90. Today, I actually
just purchased
http://fotos.infonavis.com/boat/2007/07/26/264950/104293_n.jpg as mentioned in post 7. It's a 1970' Evinrude 4hp outboard, runs great (not mounted yet though). I was doing
alot of research before buying, and found
most canoe go-ers are using the 3.5hp, and in my area, it's alot harder to find exactly what you want, so I went with this solid gem. I'm going to be mounting it up (rear and centered) in a few days, I'll probably start a thread on my little project too. So that sums up what I've got goin on, but that wasn't my point to your post.
My point is such: If your motorized canoe is unstable, you could set yourself up with some ama/outriggers. I plan on doing this myself too since lake Erie, Detroit River and lake St. Clair tend to be a little choppy at times.
