I just had to share this with you all. I was out bass fishing, and this little bluegill hit my crankbait! I thought I missed a bass strike,he hit it pretty hard, but when I finished my retrieve, surprise! I had this gill on. This has happened to me before, but not too often. Have many of you had a fish hit a lure that was almost as big as the fish itself? :)

I don't know, the lure I'm using looks like a gill, maybe he was just defending his territory or something?
I've caught fingerling walleyes and bass this way too, by accident!
What are these little fish thinking? LOL :D
He was released without harm!

about a 3yr old female 'gill....hard to say why...could be their instinct to feed heavy as the days get shorter...that's what triggers wallys and smallies, likely most fish in general.
How was the fight?? 15-20 mins??:D

Fiesty little bugger. That hardware (Swivel) must be killing the action of that bait

That is a huge swivel for the lure.

I have caught several little 'gills, goggle eye (rock bass) and green sunfish on hard baits like that. I even caught a 10" bluegill on a musky Jitterbug.

I have also caught a lot of small LM and SM bass on floating Rapalas as big or bigger than they were.

That happened to me the last time I was fishing. A small bass hit my rapala painted like a perch. The bass was actually smaller than the lure.

Gotta love an aggressive little bugger like that eh? Here's my regular fishing partner Dave couple weeks ago with a first-year hybrid striper - notice how he holds the fish out towards the camera to make it look like a whopper:

Lose that swivel for sure, also a 4# Bass can staighten it out like it was nothing. If you need a snap use a stainless steel duolock snap

check www.animatedknots.com and go for the rapala knot. Natural action

Well, I never knew what the knot I've been using for years was called...the "Trilene" knot. Can't even remember where I learned it(probably from a package of Trilene). It works on my lures though. I also use a split ring.

Thanks for the url.

Oh, and yes, I've snagged many a small bluegill when cranking for bass...those little suckers are MEAN! ;-)

I have caught a 3 inch minnow on a 6 inch finesse worm. Yes it was Texas rigged, and no, the minner didn't push the hook through. It had gotten fouled on a missed strike, and when I was bringing it back to shore, to recast, the dam minnow managed to hook him self in the mouth. I almost cast with him on there, before I saw the silvery flash on my green pumpkin worm.

Yeah, I know that swivel was too big....but it was the only one I had at the time and I didn't feel like re-tying every time while changing lures.
Actually, the action wasn't too bad, I caught a few bass that day, under not so great conditions (cold front)

Like Lubedude, I often do use the stainless steel snaps, these work nicely.

I've heard of the Trilene knot, and I have faithfully used Trilene line for years, but I tie with the improved clinch knot.

I guess a well tied knot and good line will prevent these fiesty little fish from getting away :D

jtexas...that is an interesting pic for sure! :)

Re: A fish who's eyes are bigger than its stomach

here's the only knot I use anymore on mono. I invented it to use on rope cause I had no formal training in knots and just needed a good knot to use on campouts. In tests, 8, 12 and 14lb mono broke before the knot (vs. improved clinch which usually breaks at the knot). 17 lb occasionally broke at the knot. In all cases it outperformed both the improved clinch and the palomar knots. Braid slips out of it, though. The palomar is the only knot I've found that will hold braided line. Tested by tieing both ends of the line to the same barrel swivel and pulling until it broke.

Tied with rope it will hold reliably without slipping but will never bind, always easy to untie. Double the bitter end back on itself at the finish; a yank on the end will free the knot easily.

Bluegills can be really aggressive. when I was younger I once put a bluegill in my fishtank that had a piranha in it that was the same size. that bluegill had that piranha pinned up in the corner of the tank for three months, everytime the piranha would leave the corner the bluegill would attack it, eventually the piranha ate the bluegill, but thats another story:D
I caught a few whiteperch in the upper chesapeake that were about the same size of the lure

Isn't Photoshop wonderful? Here are three photos that have made their way around the world in emails and various websites.

I showed them to some of my fishing buddies, and they claim they are fakes. They think the first photo is really a small perch that the artist added spots on to look like a Northern's favorite meal.

The second, they believe the fisherman has an anguished look on his face because he accidentally sat on a treble hook and the other end is stuck to the seat, and he can't get up to remove it!

They say the third one shows a fisherman who has a really disappointed look on his face because a snapping turtle just ate his biggest catch of the day and all that is left is the head.

Mmmmm.

It's happened to me before, and it always seems like the little fish or the stick put up a much harder fight than a decent bass. Those sticks can sure fight
