To start I have a 1991 Celebrity with a 5.7 and Alpha I Gen II lower unit which is having a few issues.

First the motor would not turn. I was just getting a click from the starter solenoid. After trying for a while something finally loosened up and the motor turned over and fired right up. Not sure if it was the starter or the solenoid was corroded, but I'm looking to replace both now. The part number on the starter was J1171.

Does anyone know what starter I can get (new or rebuilt) that is quality and wont cost me my left arm?

Second. While running I noticed there was barely any water coming out of the prop so I shut it down and inspected everything when I noticed the exhaust bellow was split. I then noticed something sticking out of it. I then found both Exhaust water flappers in the bellow. So now I have a bellow kit coming along with new flappers and shift cable.

How do I swap out the Flappers? Not even sure where they are in the exhaust system.

Parts coming in Wed and leave for vacation with boat on Sun...

That number is not the starter part number, it means the starter is rated for marine use.

The exhaust bellows are ok if there is a crack. When in the water, and the engine is off they are completely full of water. The larger U-joint bellows above it is a different story, water in there and problems. If you have cracks in the U-joint bellows I'd plan to do all.

Ayuh,... A Bad impeller causes the shutters to burn up, 'n fall down the pipes,...

They Belong at the Top of the Y-pipe...

Here is pic of the flappers (aka shutters). They secure into place at the top of the "Y" pipe that heads down to the transom assembly.

I just replaced mine, as I found the remnants of the old shutters in the outdrive.

As mentioned with the starter, make sure it is a marine starter (not automotive) It should have the SAE J1171 certification label on it.

Regarding the starter, look into having yours rebuilt. A good shop can make it as good as new for less than a new or rebuiilt one and you know it is the correct starter.

Can you explain how the impeller would affect the exhaust flappers?

The impeller supplies the water that cools the exhaust so the rubber hoses and shutters don't get burned up.
Ever seen rubber hoses used on the ends of automotive exhaust manifolds?

Got the new flappers in. Checked the impeller and it looked great. Changed it anyway though.

Why replacing solenoids and starter. Did you clean all the connections to make sure they are "tight and bright" before you bought parts?

I would rather be safe than sorry. Rather not be stuck out on the water when I could just replace them at the first sign of trouble. I did clean off the major connections and the problem still existed. Then suddenly out of the blue something broke loose and it started. So I just replaced it. Obviously some corrosion in there.
