I have not been able to get any numbers from my outdrive or engine (oh and I have the bruises to show that I tried). I have a Trophy 2052 built in 20004 with a 4.3 and with a alpha 1 gen two outdrive. When I pulled the drive this year I found gear oil in the bellows. I have since tried to get everything to do the job. My concern is setting the rolling torque. I have been reading (way too much) that when I change the oil seal (if the yolk does not have a huge groove in it) that I need to relieve the bearings pre load and then torque to a rolling resistance of 5.25 in lb. I do have a bearing separator on the way and just want to make sure that I just need to place it between the two bearings to relieve the pre load then re torque?

The old manual wanted you to take it completely apart for some reason, but the newer manual gave a much easier method, plus some actual ranges for the rolling torque.

I guess what my mind is not griping is the “ reset the preload by REMOVING the gear and bearing pac from the U-joint.. And as I am typing I have a dohh moment. I need to stop overthinking and just do what it said.. Thanks you just made the last summer with all my kids a great one!!!

Did you even look at the picture I posted from the newer manual? There is no need to completely disassemble it, you gain nothing. Tapping it with a brass hammer loosens the preload so you can start over.

So with the pre load range they recommend for used berings what would you set it at?

When you get within the range, stop messing with it.

Sounds good. Much easier then trying to hit the 5.25 they use to say.

Re: A few questions and a few pictures

Hold the bearing race in your hand and tap the end of the gear. It's not going to take a lot of hammering, one tap should relieve the tension of over torquing. Turn the bearing, you'll see.

Re: A few questions and a few pictures

My torque gage came today so I hope I can get this done. Have one question before I removed the nut I checked the preload and it did not move the gage at all. I am going to replacethe seal and set it back to 5in per pound. Does this plan sound ok?
