Hi there, i just bought my self an aussie release 1988 mod Bayliner Sunbridge 3485 here in oz and have a few questions. I purchsed at auction and have no info what so ever about this boat and unfortunately due to age finding difficult to find info.

First of all the table pedistals are missing or broken, just wondering if there is a web site in the states i can order them from??
Had no keys what so ever so had the lock smith through but as for the cabnet doors just wondering if there is a std key avail and if so a site to purchase them from, they are a half moon type.
How many people is it approved to carry??

I and a friend took it for the first run today, it hasn't been mooved from its mooring in over 12 months so has plenty growth underneath. We couldn't get it up on the plane and apparently this is quite normal when plenty growth on hull and prop, is it normal??, all she did was sink in the bum, growl under load and create a huge wake. Running twin 454's.

How does this kind of boat perform out side, thinking of planning a few game fishing runs with the mates but dont want to push it??

Any help be much appreciated.
Cheers

Ohh and the radar arch is a little flexible, just wondering if should be rigid or supposed to have some sideways movement and downward in the centre??
I appears may have had some repairs and thinking maybe stood on at some point fitting the covers and or TV anteea etc.

Right here on iBoats:

It would probably be easier to just replace the cabinet locks with new ones, that way you have spare keys in the future.

How many people is it approved to carry??

A vessel in that size range isn't really listed to carry a certain number of people. It is based on gross (overall) weight, including all items stored aboard, along with fuel & water. Generally speaking (very generally), you could probably carry up to 10-12 people, assuming you weren't maxed out loading and had all of the necesary life saving wquipment for each person. I have a 37' vessel and have had 14 aboard without issue. Try to find room for 14 life preservers, food, beach equipment, etc and you'll see what I mean. The physical crowding isn't the problem, it's making sure everyone is safe and the boat isn't overloaded.

It can happen, but it shouldn't be there. Before you run the boat again, have it hauled and check/clean the bottom. This includes shafts (if inboards) or outdrives if I/O's. Check the trim cylinders and the trim tabs for excessive growth and to make sure all mover freely. Pull the drain plug in the transom and see if water comes out. Check the bilge for standing water, as well as any structural supporting mambers. Sound on the stringers with a rubber mallet for soft spots. I'm not dure if your transom contains any wood. If you have I/O's, it does. If you have inboards with shafts, it may not since it doesn't support heavy weight. Your radar arch should not flex or wobble. Look into it closer to find the reason why.

Thanks for your reply, will check the link for the pedistals

unfortunately there are 10 or so cabnets and to replace all the locks will be expencive, they look to be a generic type lock where 1 key would fit all, would be a nightmare having different keys for each cabinet, surely i can buy a couple of the keys somewhere, where 1 ket fit all??

I have 12 PFD's on board which i just bought the other day and stowed under seating, but i have a family gatheing soon where by i was planning to take a few out for a run to a local attraction (in sheltered waters only) but would be maybe 15 passengers inc a few kids just not sure about safety/capeability etc

Have checked the boat right out with respect to water in hull etc, all is well so am guessing is the growth but just though there was enough horsepower to not wory about that?? I hope there is a radical difference with clean hull,props/trim plates as would want decent horse power to climb a swell if outside game fishing.

The trip tabs seem to be working fine but i chose not to mess with them trying to plane with the diry hull, figure not worth busting its guts if it doesnt want to go.

Am, diving under it on the weekend to give her a clean, not slipping it for a few months as need some cash to do a couple other things while slipped including re-anti-foul.

Whats your thoughts on this boat outside for a little fishing in the calmer weather??

cheers again.

Have you checked the flotation foam?
I don't think anything that size has foam, in fact you rarely see it above 20 ft. due to no regulations requiring it . . . :)

The cabinet locks can be purchased all keyed alike. 10 or so cabinets = 10 or so locks @ 6.00 each. If that's too expensive, I suggest you get rid of the boat now. You are going to drop $100 & up weekly on random things the first few months.

Why would you try to plane out a 16,000 lb boat without trim tabs?!? That is why they're installed. Don't bust an engine trying to get it to flatten out. Use the tabs. Run both tabs down for 3-4 seconds before even throttling up. When your RPM's are up, the boat will start nosing into the water, then you back off the tabs until you find that sweet spot. Big boat handling is way different than small boats.

Cleaning the hull will make a big difference in the performance. If you're going to either haul or dive the boat, make sure that the zincs are replaced. I'm sure after 12 months, they're going to need to be replaced if there's anything left of them.

As far as being offshore in calm waters, you can go anywhere you want as long as the water is calm. I don't know how it will handle if it kicks up to 4-6' seas. Might suck being out there.

Re: A few Bayliner Sunbridge 3485 questions please

is it shaft drive or legs, what rpms do you get at WOT??

where are you in AU, im on the gold coast and have a 32 foot mustang it has 2, 4.3 efi,s and bravo 2 drives and will get to 50 kmph

so twin 454,s should just about jump out of the water, maybe it was propped to run at displacement speed to conserve fuel

cause those suckers are going to eat fuel like pumping it straight over the side

you would want to do a lot of local running before venturing to far from land i would think

On that note, my 37 (same engines, but a little more efficient due to MPI), average 1 MPG over the course of a tank. 1.5 at 8 MPH cruise and .7 on plane. Depending on your load, bottom condition, trimming, water conditions, etc, you can figure at burning a total of 30-36 GPH while running on plane.

Hey thanks for you help guys, yes i am learning a few thing about being a big boat owner as opposed to owning an 18ft er.
Wont be afraid to use the trim tabs from now on.
Am also based on the Gold Coast, moored hope harbour.

Re: A few Bayliner Sunbridge 3485 questions please

You are getting some good responses here on IBoats, which is the best general boating forum IMHO. Plus, it is great place to buy stuff. However, just so you know, there is a "brand specific" forum called the Bayliners Owners Club. Not near the traffic there is here but you might want to check in there too for info on your specific model.

To the Mods....I apologize in advance if I have broken any rules by mentioning another forum. The BOC does NOT sell merchandise.

That's OK ^^^ and within our guidelines. We know those guys at the BOC, and there is some cross mojination. To clarify, you can even reference competitive, commercial sites, just not in the first post of a new thread. This rule helps eliminate deliberate spam, as opposed to deliberate help . . . With all that said, and your post is a great example, we (mods and members) generally believe it's common courtesy to mention iboats when you can and to use iboats when it makes sense. There is no rule or guideline suggesting or requiring same :)

Yeh no doubt you will, the pin/slipping sands will be our local haunt as have 4 kids to entertain and i recon i might be able to catch a fish and or crab over there also.
What the name of your vessel, we ar Miss-B-Havin.
cheers
