crzy4wlvs

Another way of thinking of it is:

1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour

where one nautical mile is one minute od arc(degrees/minutes/seconds sort of thing)

so really if you look at a nautical chart - travelling 8 knots means that you will travel 8 minutes on the map in one hour.

Unfortunately the ground distance of one minute of longitude varies for differing latitudes (which makes it a bit confusing)

I hope i havent made it more complicated than it should be

Cheers
Troy

The way I was taught about knots in my pilot training was that 1 nautical mile was 1.15 statute miles hence 1 nautical MPH is 1.15 statute mph's. So if you went 100 nautical miles per hour you would be going 100 statute mphs.

Specks N Reds is correct, Lee5267 made an error [perhaps thinking one thing and saying another as I tend do from time to time]. If you wanna prove it for yourself, get a GPS and try a simple run. You can switch from statute to nautical after the run to compare results. However, if you are asking this question, learn to fully understand navigation before depending on a GPS to get you there!
