a car question help me my friends

ok a car question today i got stranded with a dead battery. I had it charged and the garage told me the alternator isnt charging right. I get home after an hour drive on the charged battery and I look at the voltage. It is in the 12 1/2 range when I push the gas it goes to about 13 1/2 amp. I notice a whine from the alternator and It seems like it smells a bit like burnt plastic. Is it the alternator thats gone

The alternator shouldn't be smelling. I would go to Autozone. They will test your alternator for free. They will also test your battery. I have had 7 alternators go on me (5 on one car in 240,000 miles). I did blow one trying to jump start an employees car. His battery had a crack on the bottom and was shorting. The alternator went the next day.

What has happened to me is the the volt meter goes down when running and keeps going down until the computer does not have enough voltage to work and the car starts to run like garbage. The battery is discharging and it is reflected on the voltage reading.

Definitely sounds like an alternator problem - Diode Trio going bad or needs rewounds. Shouldn't be smelling - the fact that the amps jumps so much when you give it gas is a good indication of a problem.

Re: a car question help me my friends

milo, I will get trashed for this, but the easiest way to check to see if you are charging or not is to have the car running and take a battery cable off.

If it is putting out, it will keep running, if not, it will die.

Also, a side note about jump starting someone, always disconnect/unplug the alt before hooking jumper cables up.
That saves the alt from being fried.

Re: a car question help me my friends

Not sure on the year. Could be your alternator belt is slipping. That would give you the smell and the sound you are hearing. Most newer cars use serpintine belt for the whole system. If you have an altenator belt I think they make a belt dress spray. Some kind of rubber rejuvenator
that makes the belt tackier. If it does have a belt it should be tight. As posted before you can take the alternator off and most auto parts stores will test it for nothing. Make sure you disconnet battery before doing this.

Re: a car question help me my friends

Milo
Would be nice to know the make and model, but....

A whine from the alternator is typical from shorted diodes, shorted or grounded stator. Either of which will result in low charge rates and over-heating causing "smell". Sure sounds like a bad alternator.

Please don't run with the battery cables off as it can cause a severe over-voltage condition which can result in costly electronic component failure (sorry SBN)

As scoop says.......take it in for a free system check and get the facts. It will be cheaper in the long run to have someone check it properly... :)

My guess, Admiral Miloman, is it is the reostat inside the Alternator. You could bring it to an Alternator rebuild shop, or in this day and age, of throw away and change parts, just change the Alternator. If it is the original Alternator, and not a rebuild core, I would op for the rebuild shop, if you have one.

Just one of GodsBeast's

Oh yea, SBN, thats how I check mine, remove hot wire while running. If it dies, the Alt is sick.
Needs attention :( . Watch the sparks reconecting!

Just one of GodsBeast's

Re: a car question help me my friends

Miloman, I take it to Auto zone and have the test it. They have a machine they will wheel out to your car. I believe they unhook one of the battery leads and put this machine in series to test what the alternator is putting out.

They also have a battery tester. You remove your battery and they will put it in the box. It will charge it and put loads on it. The best thing is it does not cost anything and it gets them sales.

One note, if you have one of those batteries with a green eye on it, don't trust it. the eye can show charged, yet the battery can be bad inside. My last 2 batteries were that way. One was even visibly bulging yet the eye was green.

Re: a car question help me my friends

If the alt has a whine to it the bearing or bushing which ever it has is collapsing and the diodes are not getting the right connection to the armature so there is why you charge sometimes and sometimes you don't. Take the alt off and take it to a rebuild shop.

Also milo, you can put a voltmeter on it before you start it and see what the reading is and then start it and see what it is then.

That might give you some kind of indication.

Hey, please.....don't do the "battery disconnect" test, especially with more modern alternators that have built in voltage regulators. That test will certainly tell you your alternator is bad...because you just fried it.

Re: a car question help me my friends

well miloman, i just saw this post, or i would have tried to help sooner. looks like you have some good ideas. i would also avoid pulling batt cables with engine running, since you can easily get a cheapo voltmeter for $10 or less, and see if the voltage is over the 12.8v- its getting a charge.

now you mentioned amps. and 12.5 - 13.5, which could be amps but you probably meant volts. so it was charging. i would say the whine was simply because your battery was never brought back up to a full charge by the time you left the garage, and the alternator was putting out a high current. this will be a noticable whine, a normal thing to hear after you've left your lights on, and barely get a car cranked up.

the burnt smell could also be 'normal' under a high current charge, IF you have oil, grease, etc like most cars get with never getting the engine cleaned regularly ;) but plastic smell is worrysome. with the 12.5(v) and then 13.5 with high revs, i think your alternator lost a diode, or like schematic listed, other possible scenarios that would hurt its output. with the amt of plastic going into/on top of alts these days, i guess a diode(probably zener) fried and possibly burnt some plastic dust cover near it...

and the sputtering is normal when your available electrical supply drops below what the ign system is designed to run on.

hope you took it to parts store for free checkup. i worked for AZone long ago, and liked their test eqmt. good luck on the outcome :D (i would be content to buy a reman alt unless a new one is only @ $50, just make sure it has same/higher output current design. for replacing battery, don't go cheap if you want to keep the car another 4yrs) IMHO

btw: i would not be surprised if you find the battery doesn't last long after this (if its old)

Milo, your alternator has a built in voltage
regulator. If it has failed , your taurus will
rapidly discharge your battery and stall your
vehicles motor. Turn on you high beams and all
of your accessories like wipers and the like.IF
your alternator or the built in voltage regulator
has failed your engine will stall when the battery
is discharged.

You probably have it fixed already.
