Re: a car question help me my friends
well miloman, i just saw this post, or i would have tried to help sooner. looks like you have some good ideas. i would also avoid pulling batt cables with engine running, since you can easily get a cheapo voltmeter for $10 or less, and see if the voltage is over the 12.8v- its getting a charge.

now you mentioned amps. and 12.5 - 13.5, which could be amps but you probably meant volts. so it was charging. i would say the whine was simply because your battery was never brought back up to a full charge by the time you left the garage, and the alternator was putting out a high current. this will be a noticable whine, a normal thing to hear after you've left your lights on, and barely get a car cranked up.

the burnt smell could also be 'normal' under a high current charge, IF you have oil, grease, etc like most cars get with never getting the engine cleaned regularly
but
plastic smell is worrysome. with the 12.5(v) and then 13.5 with high revs, i think your alternator lost a diode, or like schematic listed, other possible scenarios that would hurt its output. with the amt of plastic going into/on top of alts these days, i guess a diode(probably zener) fried and possibly burnt some plastic dust cover near it...

and the sputtering is normal when your available electrical supply drops below what the ign system is designed to run on.

hope you took it to parts store for free checkup. i worked for AZone long ago, and liked their test eqmt. good luck on the outcome
(i would be content to buy a reman alt unless a new one is only @ $50, just make sure it has same/higher output current design. for replacing battery, don't go cheap if you want to keep the car another 4yrs) IMHO

btw: i would not be surprised if you find the battery doesn't last long after this (if its old)
