99 yamaha c115 trim&tilt

I have seen 2 different ways to check trim&tilt fluid levels. What is the proper way & how do you fill it?

only one way to check it.
engine all the way up and set on the tilt support,keeps your fingers intact in case of a problem.
remove the resevoir cap or plug and fill to the bottom of the hole.
if it hasnt been leaking its a sealed system and simply cant get low,unless it leaks.
