Engine starts run and idles fine but not charging battery.

After run just use charger to refresh the battery, Tech said if continue to use this way
will have fire on board and burn all associated electrical parts

Tech says rectifiers probably $450. Stators about $145. Not knowing which one
have read if Tac works (which is does) the rectifiers are fine and it is just the Stator

Can anyone confirm. Have seen rectifiers as low as $45 part # 194-5279. Motor is actually
a 98 believe beginning with OG8

Where did the shop get the price for the rectifier ??--------Ask the party to look up the price of a rectifier for that motor with no guess.------------Price for the voltage regulator is less than $200 I believe.-------Did the shop volunteer to do any testing ?---------Have you had your battery tested ?-----------If the tach works it seems to suggest that all is working fine.

Checking two other OEM marine suppliers the rectifiers avg is $182 pp without tax/shipping. So with parts/supplier mark up and labor the Tech seems OK. Test meter confirms no charging and battery (test fine - takes charge). I can live with periodic battery charging but, this deal with potential fire if Stator and/or rectifier
deficient is obviously a concern. Can anyone confirm that?

Make sure you get the correct voltage regulators for that motor. Early 80s V6 motors had simple rectifiers. Middle 80s V6 motors had a single 40Amp VR. Later models had twin 20A voltage Regulators. What do you have?

A 40Amp charging system failure could cause a fire. I would recommend you fix it or at least insulate the stator wires to prevent fire.

Is that rectifier actually a rectifier and voltage regulator in one unit? I ask because $182 dollars for a rectifier is insane. Knowing what it takes to build a rectifier, somebody is making a ton of money on them. If it also has the voltage regulator built in, then I could see a little high price range. JMHO

Thanks for your help, Correct it has two and believe there is regulator built in. Has turned out the meter I was using
to detect charging was bad and got decent digital multi meter which started at 12.4V and ended at 14.05V after running
at 2500 RPM for a minute.
