Hello all,
I am new to the forum, and am having some trouble with my '99 Volvo-Penta 5.0Gi with TBI in my Four Winns Horizon 200. I have read some of the sticky threads, and am preparing to do some deeper troubleshooting, but wanted to see if anyone has experienced a very similar problem and can point me in the right direction off the bat.
The problem started a couple weeks ago. We dropped the boat in the water and had a tough time getting it started. After cranking for awhile and pumping the throttle at the right time, it started and ran just fine. About 45min later we had the boat out on some relatively rough water, and were running close to WOT when the engine completely died. The gauges and ignition switch went completely dead. I initially thought the kill switch got knocked loose (and it did seem to be off slightly, but not completely). We got a tow back to shore and brought the boat home, which is when I learned about the ignition breaker on the dash (it had tripped). I reset the breaker, and the boat fired up instantly in the driveway (and I shut it off just as quickly).
The next weekend we dropped the boat in and fired it up at the dock. It idled for about 30sec, and the ignition breaker tripped again. I tried resetting it several times, but every time I tried to turn the key, it would instantly trip.
I took the boat home and began inspecting the boat for loose wires, bad grounds, or shorts. The only thing I found was that I had a Perfectpass system tapped into the power wire behind the ignition switch, so I completely removed everything from the Perfectpass to help eliminate possibilities. I couldn't find any other wiring, connectors, or suspect areas that looked like they might be troublesome.
After a thorough inspection, I tried to start the boat quickly in the driveway again. It will crank and crank, but won't fire. I recently changed distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs, and had been out on the water several times after the tune-up with no problems.
At this point I am suspect of the ignition coil. Is it possible for the coil to go bad and overload the circuit to the point that the breaker will trip? On the Volvo-Penta parts website, they show an external coil for TBI engines (which I have), as well as a coil and module internal to the distributor - am I right to assume that my engine only has the external coil and internal module, or does it also have an internal coil with a funny naming convention? Could one of the internal distributor ignition parts go bad and cause similar problems?
Any thoughts or insights are much appreciated, I am not afraid of trying anything and everything you can throw at me for troubleshooting!
Thanks in advance (and sorry for the novel),
Derek
