I just replaced the impeller on this motor, and w/o a manual there was much more bumbling than probably necessary- after finally getting it back together I am unable to adjust the shift linkage so that it will go from F to N to R -(only F&N or N&R)-the travel distance of the rod seems limited somehow. Is there a trick to this I am missing? TIA

Not really. With the engine shift in the same position has the gears(IE Forward & Forward or Neutral & Neutral)) connect up the rods.

I got the rods connected so that the shifter will go to any position now, but can't seem to make it go to N - when in that position, it will start, but in gear. Shouldn't the prop spin freely with the shifter in that position? Does this indicate a problem with the rod setting or could it be 180 degrees wrong at the bottom end?

Re: '99 NS5B shift linkage prob./?

Just went through similar episode with my 5 hp. If you haven't done it before it seems to take 3 hands! Make sure that the shift linkage rod went through the small rubber gromet on the front edge of middle housing as it is supposed to. You will see the end poke through. I have had to fight with mine a little since it makes a little bend. It can be tricky for me to line up the driveshaft, the water pickup tube and the shift rod at the same time. If the shift rod were to not go through that rubber seal and end up inside the housing somehow, it would limit the shift movement and create problems as you described. Once that is in place, the shift rod from the upper housing will lie alongside it. The clamp holding the two together can be tricky to tighten without it falling off one or the other of the shift rods. When the two are threaded in the clamp and tightened, if the motor doesn't shift easily, a very slight twist of the lower shift shaft (that is accessable at the top since you can see the end) may help it to shift more easily. If it is not in the right gear as shown by the lever, the lower shift lever can be moved up or down as needed to correct the problem. Hope that helps.

Re: '99 NS5B shift linkage prob./?

Thanks, Dan -got it fixed up this A.M. -one thing that was causing me major greif was that a local machanic told me it needed to be in F gear -WRONG! -it needed to be in R -otherwise the rod clamp is too far up inside to tighten. Also, mine has a pin that keeps the clamp attached to the shifter rod (so it won't fall off that one) maybe your has a hole for a similar setup. Hope that helps you.
