I have a 80 4-stroke that smokes like a B&S at times...normally at start up after being run.Has anyone run into this problem? It has also had a rough idle since new that the dealers can't seem to cure.I have spent all the money on it that I'am going to spend...do you think Yamaha will cover it(it's been off warrenty for 11 months)? Thanks

Rings, valve guide seals, PCV systems, headgasket leaking next to overhead cam chain tower, causes excess oil in cylinder. May be others on this engine.

RG,

Have you veryified that the engine is indeed using oil?

The smoke could be from an extremely rich condition also. That would be more in line with your idling concerns.

You think you bought a 4 stroke but it thinks its a 2 stroke huh! try this, make sure your engine is trimmed positive when you shut it down.If its negative the oil in the cylinder bores runs toward the piston rings instead oh draining back to the oil sump. I had the very same experiance with my merc 90 4 stroke. The dealer was of no use in solving this problem, I had to figure this out my self.Good luck.

I was just ramblim, not that I know of, techie may be right, sounds good. I would check the pcv valve and system if it has one.
