I posted this on boatsetup.com but got no response. engine misses while running. On the way home last week we lost power. Engine restarted easily and we chugged home at 5.5 knots. I tried a few times on the way home to power up but it won't let me power past say 2000 RPMs before being knocked back down by something. I tried to ease it through this range with the same results. Took it to the Evinrude/Johnson dealer, they can reproduce the problem but no codes get stored in the computer. So far, i've read everything there is on this web site and others. I suspect a voltage regulator, oil pump, water in the oil tank, blocked screen in the fuel tank, or a bad ECU. Any other ideas?
Thanks
Randy

Randy - Get prepared to take out your wallet, turn it upside down and shake vigerously. You can read lots here:

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/ficht/

Also hit the red search at the top of the page. Those motors have a lousy reputation.

Sorry

You may want to check the blocking diode in your harness. It should be buried about 24.5 inches back from the plug at the engine end. If it is burned, the SLOW system sends the wrong signals. You may be able to test with your ohm meter without pulling the cable apart. The wire should be tan or yellow/red.

You may also test by disconnecting the temperature sensors on the block momentarily so that you can see if the motor will then go above 2000 RPM.

ezeke: Thanks for the advice. I will check that as soon as I get the boat back.

For the record I got a call from my indie Evinrude mechanic and he said the problem was in the crank position sensor. $100 for the part and $100 to diagnose and replace (labor).

I'll be sure to put the boat in the water as soon as possible after getting it back to see for sure it's fixed. Thanks again

Randy
